Do i need a thermostat controler for lagers?

Hello everyone. I recently picked up a used refrigerator and am going to brew my first lager batch, do I need to buy and install a refrig. thermostat controller or can I get by on carefully monitoring and setting the fridge at the correct settings?
 
The thermostats that come with most refrigerators are very inaccurate. I'm also not sure that you'll get it to go as high as 50 degrees. I'd suggest a temp controller.
