I've got tons of used cheap commercial wine bottles with screw on caps. For some reason I feel reluctant to reuse the screw on cap. I just feel like it might not give me the same kind of seal the second or third time around. Can I cork these like any other wine bottle? The inner diameter of the neck seems the same with an eyeball measurement. Any reason it shouldn't be done?

The necks really aren't designed to take the pressure of a cork being forced in there.

Thanks. So is reusing the screw on cap a bad idea?

For long term storage, yes, bad idea. You'll never know if you get a good seal.

I use them myself in a pinch, but only for a few days and the wine goes in the fridge.

I have used them on wines stored for up to a year with no problem so far.

I have corked many a screw cap bottle with no problem at all. I use a lot of Boone's bottles that came with screw caps. If the corks are wet they slide right on in. Mike
