I have never used one but if you were to pitch a large and healthy starter you shouldn't need an airlock. The CO2 produced by the fermentation will float on top of the beer protecting it from oxygenation. The lid itself will block things from falling in. I'd probably just use two 6gal better bottles, but that's me.
 
I agree with cvstrat, the airlock is not all that important for most ferments.

if you really wanted to, you could drill a hole, add a grommit and voila, airlock port.

They converted a "Brute" trash can into a fermenter with this method, a bit of keg lube and some simple clamps in a recent issue of BYO.
