OK, so I want to move away from kits and I came up with this, its pretty simple.

5 Gallons
6.6 lbs Briess Golden light LME
.5 lb light crystal malt steeped till 170
2 oz Cascade hop pellets at beginning boil
.75 Simcoe hop pellets to finish

Sound OK?

Define OK for us... You can build a recipe using your approach and you will get beer. If you are attempting to brew a certain type of beer than there is more involved. I suggest looking at the BCJP style guide and then pick something that interests you. Research the ingredients that profile of beer is comprised of and then develop a recipe.

Well I've been researching making and ale and thought this might be a good first start.

Is there a particular style or feature that you are going for? I am relatively new to brewing so there could be a reason for your hop schedule, but I would use simcoe for bittering and the cascade for aroma, simply to save cost. Or to really simplify, use one type for both.

Brewing software had really helped me understand how to build recipes.
