Triple fermentation

I was reading the latest issue of Beer Advocate when I came across an Italian beer which was triple fermented. Not sure exactly about process of triple fermentation. Is it just the addition of more fermentables/yeast at certain points?

fermenting original wort, sugar addition after that and priming bottles

...so it's akin to triple hopping?

Never was much for Italian beer.
