Obviously I'm going to have one for the MLT, but are there any issues with just using the ball valve to drain either the kettle or the hot liquor tank?

Your vessels will only drain to the level of the ball valve. Most people want to drain as much as they can.
You can always tip the vessel to get more out, but when you're dealing with hot liquid, fire, etc. it usually seems easier and safer to use pickup tubes.

ah, gotcha. thanks.

at the final stages of getting my all grain setup together and just making sure I have all my bases (and expenses) covered.
