Hey all, you've all been extremely helpful so far, but a n00bs questions never cease.
I just transferred a kolsch to secondary and was going to add gelatin to help it clear. I boiled a cup of water in a shallow pan and removed it from the heat. I then added about 1.5 tablespoons of gelatin. After letting it sit it had a funny smell, almost a scorched smell. I fogired that I added the gelating to a too hot pan so I didn't add it to the secondary. Is that smell normal? or is my too hot of a pan therory correct. Hopefully I'm going to try again tomorrow.

That's close to the smell. Guess I just wasted $0.98 due to paranoia. Oh well, I'll try again tomorrow. Thanks BierMuncher
Add your gelatin to a cup of hot tap water and stir.
Bring the mix to about 180 degrees on the stove. DO NOT BOIL.
Cool slightly and add to secondary.
