I've been reading absolutely everything I can find lately on AG brewing. And First Wort Hopping comes up every so often. I understand you add the hops after you collect your first runnings, but why do this instead of adding to the boil? You're not extracting bitterness at 155* are you? Is it strictly flavor???

It will indeed effect flavor, especially in a Pils or Lager.

I do a FW on all my Pils and without question I can tell a noticeable (and good) difference.

In particular, it gives more of a middle range hop that you cannt get with a boil alone.

Just my 2 cents, your mileage may vary..

FW will produce aprox 40 %f the total IBU.

This is assuming low alpha hops.

I would not do it with a high alpha, it might be a bit much for some.
