I am trying to predict the IBU's in the Northern Brewer Oktoberfest kit I'm currently brewing. I'm concerned the bitterness my be a little too low, even for my tastes. The kit includes 1oz Hallertau with 3.8% AA and instructs a late addition of the LME @ 15 min.
I'm doing a 2.5 gal boil for 60 min and topping to 5.5 gal. Hops boil for 60 min. By my calcs, the 45 min boil is 1.021 (5.5 gal). The 15 min boil is 1.063 (measured/5.5 gal).
So, by my hand calculations the Tinseth IBU is 14. Beersmith calculates it as 10.6. I do have the options set to use Tinseth, and specified the late LME addition. Does anyone know how Beersmith is carrying out the calculation? Perhaps it is adjusting for boil evaporation?
