So I jumped on the bandwagon and tried my hand at both a IIPA and continuous hopping and first wort hopping.

My question is how is the best way to figure the IBU’s of this monster.
Here is what I did, if you can tell me your estimates that would be great. I did some calculations myself and came up with an estimate of 84 IBU. I may be way off.
My OG is 1.071
Hops used
Amarillo whole leaf @ 9.3 AAU
Simcoe whole leaf @ 12.9 AAU

½ oz each first wort hopping

Then:
I took 3oz of each mixed in a big bowl
I added ¼ oz every 2.5 min for a total of 60 min

Any help from the IBU Gods?
Cheers
JJ

...and by 32.5 min you have used up all your hops...with 162 IBUs...

I had a 1/4 oz to put in every 2.5 min. thats 1 oz every 10 min a total of 6 oz + the 1/2 ea FWH a total of 7 oz. 3.5 Amarillo and 3.5 Simcoe

I didnt run out until I hit 60 min
I already brewed this bad mama jama

I'm retarded...

I mistook the 3oz of each to mean 3 oz. total starting at 60 min...

At any rate, the IBU's are up there. :D

Doesn't beersmtih have something for continuos hopping? I am at work so and I cant look at it but I think I remember seeing that in there before.

yes, theoretically you could calculate the IBU contribution from each addition and add them up for your IBUs. I would suggest making a spreadsheet to do it and sharing it with everyone on the board!:mug:

Or you could see how the beer comes out, since it's already brewed at this point and what is done is done...

nah not retarded. tired maybe

I am not sure if beersmith has that or not. I don't have beersmith:mad:

Oh brother If I could design and create a spreadsheet I would. That’s a bit more than I can do.
I am not really worried about the beer, just wondering how to calculate it.
I calculated my additions into 4 groups

60 min:
Amarillo 1.25 oz 21% utilization 16 IBU
Simcoe 1.25 oz 21% utilization 22 IBU

45 min:
Amarillo .75oz 18% utilization 8 IBU
Simcoe .75oz 18% utilization 11 IBU

30 min:
Amarillo .75oz 15% utilization 6.5 IBU
Simcoe .75oz 15% utilization 9 IBU

15 min:
Amarillo .75oz 11% utilization 5 IBU
Simcoe .75oz 11% utilization 6.75 IBU
Total of 84.25

with the FWH going into the 60 min group

I wanted to see it there was a better way, or for that matter a more accurate way to calculate the hopping schedule

I have Beer Smith up in front of me and I see no option for continuous hopping (I could be wrong of course). I'd probably just put a whole lot of evenly spaced, small hop additions to get as accurate as possible. I'm sure it would be hard to tell the difference.

The only way you can find this out is to take the integral over the full 60 minute boil. Hope you are up-to-speed with your calculus. :)

Of course, using beersmith with a whole lot of tiny additions stretched out over short intervals will get you really close to the correct answer, but that's taking the easy way out.

Even though the hopping isn't truly continuous, that is probably the easiest way to get close with pencil and paper (assuming the hop utilization formula is easily integrable but I think I recall the one I've seen being a polynomial).

Excel would be a piece of cake on an ad-hoc basis.

Anyone care to graph it? :D

One thing to note is that the formula make no difference in calculation within a five minute interval, so it would be the same if you added a half ounce total every 5 minutes.

This time I averaged the AA% of the two hops and just did the combined five minute additions and came up with just about the same number. The previous one used slightly more hops because I had to use 0.13 instead of 0.125, so that's probably the cause of the slight difference.

200 IBU seemed a bit on the high side. Then I got to looking at my OP and I am the dumba$$ and forgot to mention this is a 12 gallon batch.
***** Jaybird runs off kicking and screeming... DUMBA$$, DUMBA$$!!!!*****
With that being said my calculations are going to be close @ 84 IBU.
Thanks and sorry for the run around
