Since most people use foil rather than an airlock, would a straight sided beaker be ok for stirplate starters?
I've found a 4L beaker far cheaper than a flask, and it seems less like to boil over.
Opinions?

Yes a beaker is definitely OK, so is a plastic bucket, a growler, I have a cookie jar that works good also. You can just boil in a pan, chill and transfer to the container of choice.

I'd say the beaker would be better only problem being keeping it sanitary with the wider neck, but being a bit careful would sort that

As long as your cover allows for gas exchange and coverage to keep things out you should be good. Airlocks aren't used because it doesn't allow gas exchange.
