If you have a long time there really is no need to fine in the first place.

Beer will clear in time on it's own as stated especially when stored chilled but your still talking several weeks to clear up. I just bought gelatin for the first time and will try it out soon to speed things up. As for the carboy, it will be fine and the gelatin will fall out of the beer and shouldn't give you any problems sitting there for a while.
