If I do the set and forget method of carbonation for my Corny, does it have to be at room temperature? I've read that the cold slows down the process, however my gas lines are inside kegerator and would be a pain in the arse to remove.
 
nope. You need it cold. Your keg should be at serving temp, and the regulator should be set at serving pressure, then just wait.

If you prime with corn sugar, that is when you need the keg at room temp.

colder liquid absorbs and holds CO2 more readily.
and you can indeed chill it, carb it, and then pull it outta the fridge for storage if you had to. as long as the keg seals well it'll stay carbed just fine this way.
