Hi All -

Planning to brew an IPA tomorrow night, and going to use all four C hops that I have on hand.

Columbus, Centennial, Cascade, and Citra. Any thoughts?

OG: 1.064
Est FG: 1.013
Batch Size: 6Gal after boil, 5.5 to carboy
Wyeast 1056 American Ale yeast with 2.5L starter.

Est IBU is 73 (Raeger)

Here is the hoping schedule I was thinking of:

1.00 oz Columbus (Tomahawk) [13.90 %] - Boil 60. Hop 6 48.1 IBUs
1.00 oz Centennial [8.70 %] - Boil 10.0 min Hop 8 6.0 IBUs
0.50 oz Columbus (Tomahawk) [13.90 %] - Boil 10. Hop 9 4.8 IBUs
1.00 oz Cascade [6.40 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 10 3.7 IBUs
0.50 oz Centennial [8.70 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 11 2.5 IBUs
0.50 oz Citra [13.40 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 12 3.9 IBUs
0.50 oz Columbus (Tomahawk) [13.90 %] - Boil 5.0 Hop 13 4.0 IBUs
0.50 oz Cascade [6.40 %] - Boil 0.0 min Hop 14 0.0 IBUs
0.50 oz Citra [13.40 %] - Boil 0.0 min Hop 15 0.0 IBUs

I'm going for big citrus and hoping to get some "dank" from Columbus (LHBS was out of simcoe).

Thanks for any feedback!

Looks tasty to me. Don't forget the dry hops though.

Also, have you plugged that starter into a calculator? 2.5L is pretty big for a a medium gravity brew.

To play up the citrus, you can also ferment 1056 on the cool side - 63ish.

Using Citra late and in the dryhop will shift your dank/citrus goal more towards tropical fruit dominance, especially depending on the amount used. Also, you're not using enough hops for your batch size at 6 total oz for a 6 gallon batch of dank IPA.

Bump your OG up to 1.070 with some corn or table sugar and then try this:

1.00 oz Columbus [13.90 %] @ 60 min
1.00 oz Columbus @ 25 min
1.00 oz Centennial [8.70 %] @ 15 min
1.00 oz Citra [13.40 %] @ 15 min
1.00 oz Centennial @ 8 min
1.00 oz Columbus @ 25 min Flameout Steep
1.00 oz Cascade @ 25 min Flameout Steep

1.00 Columbus @ 7-10 day Dryhop
1.00 Cascade @ 7-10 day Dryhop
1.00 Centennial @ 7-10 day Dryhop

What does your grain bill look like?

Thanks for the feedback!

@Bill - I used a calculator, but I am not using a stir plate, so its a simple starter with some occasional shaking, and I am only using a single smack pack for the starter.

@bobbrews - Thanks for the tip, I was afraid it might not be enough hops.

86% - Canadian 2-Row
6.8% - Carastan 30L
5.1% - Munich 10L
1.7% - Crystal 40L

I might have to go the LHBS and grab some more columbus.

Thanks, Chris

Good luck. Looks decent. I would probably nix the C40 though. Or half the Carastan. These are very close cara- malts anyways, the only issue may be the high percentage. Try knocking off 3% and see where that takes you.

5oz of hops in the last 10 minutes of the boil is certainly not too little hops.

True. His version contained 5 oz. in the last 10 minutes of the boil...

And my revised version still contains 5 oz. in the last 15 minutes of the boil... The focus is just slightly shifted.

Remember... this is a 6 gallon batch and he wants it to be dank.

Not knocking your recipe, just saying the OP's sounded pretty good as is and would be plenty hoppy.

Also, most people don't have a pump and that dramatically changes the value of those whirlpool additions.
