In fact, if the vortex gets too deep, it will tend to throw your bar. So long as it keeps the yeast slurry agitating around decently, you're good. Can you post a pic or, even better, a video?

I was worried that you watched it with the flask empty and the bar was moving slowly (in which case, a larger bar would not likely help). If the issue is a small vortex, a larger bar may help.
