You really don't need a big swirling vortex. In fact, if the vortex gets too deep, it will tend to throw your bar.
So long as it keeps the yeast slurry agitating around decently, you're good.

Ok. I was worried that you watched it with the flask empty and the bar was moving slowly (in which case, a larger bar would not likely help).
If the issue is a small vortex, a larger bar may help.

You really only need a small dimple on the surface. You don't need a really big vortex.
