I went to topeka to check out those two new home brew shops last Friday. All grain brewing specialist had an address listed that took me to a residential area on the north end of town, so unless it's in a private residence with a no trespassing sign, I must have been in the wrong place. But that was the only address I could find, from there website and google maps. The downtown craft brew was unfortunately closed and I peeked through the windows and saw a lot of sensory space. It seems as they don't have much of anything in stock. I saw a lot of DME and a couple bottles of star San. I doesn't seem as though they have much of any hardware as of yet. The could have more in the back but I think I'll give it a few months before I make a trip back up there, and maybe they'll have things I need by then. If anyone is planning on going to "all grain brewing" I would say call them and get some directions first.

All Grain is closed AFAIK, and my dad just told me over the weekend that the Downtown Craft Brew place has super limited hours (like only open Tue-Fri or something). You basically have to call the guy and he'll come open the shop for you.

I grew a hops vine when I lived in Pratt. I cant remember what strain. I was just a teen and I planted it in full sun next to my grandmas trailer. It grew like crazy till my brother trampled it down after I moved. The soil was really sandy. I never fertilized it.

I'm a bit limited on space, but my cascades had the most southern exposure and performed the best, until about mid July. Then magnums with partial shade on the south started doing better. My fuggles had more shade on the south and grew more slowly but for a longer period. This may have more to do with lengthening the time for root development, and might not transfer into higher yields. As I am still stuck using planters i have been considering building movable trellises so I can start them in full sun and move them into more shade as days get hotter. Nearly everything I've read says sandy soil is preferred, but in a pot it seems to drain very quickly to were I was watering three times a day. To simplify that I turned growlers full of water upside down in the soil to keep a small trickle going throughout the day. For fertilizer I added about a tablespoon of composted chicken poop to each growler about once a week once cones started growing. This year I'm going to increase the size of the planters and grow clover or mustard greens in them as well to provide cover to the roots from the sun as well as add nitrogen. Obviously I've got a lot of plans for my little hop garden, I just hope the pan out.

I preordered some rhizomes ,Nugget and cascade. I've had a glacier plant for 2 years now and I've neglected it it both years. My wife said she's excited to see what they look like when they grow, so I went online and found a picture of a 2 story house with 3-4 plants growing up some twine all the way to the top. Suddenly my wife is not so interested in what the hops will(should) look like when fully matured. Lol

All-Grain Brewing is open and is located in a residential area. It is run by a really nice older couple out of their home. I order from them all the time.

Was talking to my coworker the other day and he mentioned that he owns a hops farm here in Kansas City. It's called Royal Hops. We proceeded to have a 2 hour discussion about beer (oops) and he said anyone who is interested in coming out to the hops farm is more than welcome. He's been supplying some smaller breweries in the area. Very interesting discussion.

As in, he would sell home brewers hops?

I couldn't take part right now, plus I usually get my grains from Tallgrass Brewery.

I just emailed them the other day to get a bag of 2-row and wheat and they have stopped selling to home brewers now that they are transitioning to the new brewery. :(

I'm not too fond of Downtown's changing hours, sparse stock and lengthy checkout process. Luckily, I found Walt's www.AllGrainBrewing.biz shop in the back of a Brew Your Own magazine and I couldn't recommend it more. Their stock and website are great. It is funny pulling up in a residential driveway to shop and pick up an order but the owners are very nice and they usually have what I need on hand. I can also tell if they have it by looking at their website first, huge advantage over Downtown.

Hey guys, I thought I posted here already, but I guess not. My friend and I ordered a pallet of grain. We ordered many different kinds and they are group buy priced. PM me if you are interested. we drive to Salina and Manhattan frequently and can meet up for delivery.

Every weekend. Slowed down through the Christmas holiday, but back to a regular schedule. Drinking a MarkToberfest at the moment. My house Oktoberfest recipe made slightly smaller, and with American lager yeast. Prosit!
