Anyone do a primary fermentation in a 5gal carboy? Obviously a blowoff tube will be used, but I'm just wondering if people do it.

thanks!

I used to all the time. Loaded a batch in to a 5gal yesterday (though grossly overfilled and should have used a 6 or 6.5. And I also use a blow off regardless of the size carboy.

i just did on sat.. my 6 gallon BB was in use.. so I had to use my 5 gal. BB.

thankfully i had the right size hose to attach to the bottom part of an airlock to make a blow off tube.. but it hadnt gotten that high just yet.. im thinking ill be ok.

before I got 6.5 gal carboys, I used 5 gallon for primary. Downside was massive blowoff, usually would only get 4.5 gal out of the batch due to blowoff. I prefer the 6.5 gal for primary now, I use my 5 gal's for bottling, as secondaries, or for less foamy drinks (mead and apfelwein).

but, with blowoff hose, a 5 gal is fine for primary.
