I'm cleaning out a bucket for my next batch and noticed it's pretty rough inside.

Can't see anything, but you can feel it. Is that beer stone?

Do I need to do anything about it?

TIA

Do you use anything inside your bucket to stir the wort with?
Even using racking canes could scratch plastic depending on how rough you are with it.

Over time you could scratch the surface doing that.

PS buckets are cheap, if you are worried, get another.

Most likely is scratching of the bucket. Buckets are cheap but in the long run if you're replacing them every 10 batches or so like some people recommend it becomes very expensive. Best solution is to avoid cleaning them with anything but an oxiclean soak or if you have to a very soft cloth.

Are you referring to the tan rough stuff that builds up over time at the krausen area?

I really don't use anything other than Oxyclean, warm water, fingers and occasionally a blue scruby on the back side of the sponge.... I have used my buckets for 2 years with no issue and I have no worries / concerns going forward.
