So I found a guy that has a few nugget hop vines growing in my area. He dried them and will sell them for $10 per pound. I'm still fairly noobish and have never used nugget before. For the price I figure I can't go wrong. No idea of AA% but I'll bet I could do a nice IPA or something. Any recipe ideas?

An all Nuggett IPA work fine. Figure 13% AA and aim for the middle of the IBU range & you should be fine.

Got this one in secondary right now:

4.0 oz Wheat, Torrified (1.7 SRM) 2.13 %
1.00 oz Nugget [12.00 %] (60 min) (Mash Hop) 13.4 IBU

Original Gravity: 1.068 SG

Poobah, how do you get an IBU rating of 136.3?

I was listening to brewing radio the other day and I'm pretty sure I heard John Palmer say that you couldn't get more than 100 IBUs into a beer.

Am I mistaken, or misinformed? Or is it just a technical error in the software?

Just curious......

No, the 100 IBU barrier is real. The isomerization process stops at that point. None of the popular calculators use the correct curves for efficiency; just approximations.

You can get above 100 IBU by boiling down a large volume of water, boiling your hops under pressure, or using steam extraction.

Drinking this as I type. Love the Nugget!

Just picked up some of the afore mentioned Nugget hops today. They smell great! Only got about a pound because I wasn't sure where I would store them, at least not w/out them getting soggy. The dude has more so after thinking about it, I'm giong to get some more. Got one of those cheap air pump deals with some zip lock bags and it seems to work ok.
Anyway thanks for the recipe ideas! Going to get something going this week. I'll keep you posted.

There's a great small brewery in Harrisburg, Troegs, that makes a great Nugget IPA. They are some great hops.

EDIT: I must be druck, I used great 3 times there.

Hey Pubah58,

This recipe looks pretty yummy. This is an older post so, how did it turn out?
I still have a bunch of those nugget hops in the freezer and I think I'm gonna brew this up soon.
I have a question about the hop amount. Is this crazy hoppy? I have never done a first wort hop before and am curious about it. It seems like 6 oz of bittering hops would be overkill for 5 gal. I guess the mash and FWH doesn't impart as much bitterness...Anyway let me know how it turned out. Thanks!
