Folks, I'm about to brew the Old Rasputin Imperial Stout Clone from BYO.
Procedurally I understand what is meant by Late Edition (Coopers Liquid Light Male Extract with 15 mins left in the boil) but why do this ?
What does this do to the brew ?

It is mainly used to create a lighter color beer since the extract carmelizes during the boil. It is also used to reduce the possibility of getting extract twang.

If it is a clone recipe it may have some effect on the overall character of the beer so I would follow the recipe as closely as possible.

right, and that's what I would have thought but trying to get a lighter color on a stout seemed counterintuitive. But you're right there's probably another reason for them to do it. Thanks !

Doing a late addition also increases the utilization of your hops. If they designed the recipe assuming a late addition I would follow it or the beer will not have the same hop profile.
