  • No, I HomeBrew but it's just because I like good beer

Well, I'm a member of the ASBC...does that qualify me? :)

EDIT: Is this a "Brew-Nerd" or an overall general "Nerd-in-life" ? Either way, I my answer is still yes.

I know I am. I am an IT dept. geek/nerd, with all those silly certifications, as well as a ham radio operator, radio control hobbyist, and I honestly believe that DEVO was the greatest live act evar!
;)

No.
I brew because.

I like good beer.
I like to be as self sufficient as possible.
I don't like giving money to the government to waste.

and

Because I can.

I vote yest, because in my opinion EVERYONE is a nerd. I've been around all types, and even the bad aZZ bikers and guys with felony convictions, etc. have a lot of nerd in them. Yup, even the "cool" are "nerds!

Brewing itself does not make someone a nerd. "Nerd" are not inherently attracted to brewing, IT, engineering, etc. any more than other fields or hobbies. But, I will say there are different levels of nerdiness, and some people fit the "classic profile" of "nerd" much more than others.

Erm... MD/PhD student. 9 years of graduate school. Really can only answer this one one way, eh? :)

Uh, let's just say a particular movie has held an important place in my life...

Really, more of a dork than a nerd, though.

:off: e lo, what kind of bike is that in your avatar?

Here's mine:

(Those are my sons in the picture)

It's an '01 Ducati SS 750ie

I have seen alot of bikes in member's galleries here. Looks like there's an awful lot of Sportster owners. My previous bike was a '98 XL1200 Sport, and I liked that bike alot but being raised on sportbikes I needed something that turned a little better without scraping the asphalt.

Ralph Nader is a nerd.

I'm a homebrewer, but i hate labels.

Cheers

all depends on the definition. I voted #2 because it's closest to how I feel, but yeah, there is some beer geekiness that courses through these veins. Does that make me a "nerd"? Does it matter? :D

I use the term "Geek"... It implies techno chic ;)

To prove it, I submit you my first great passion (brewing is my second)... Free Software.

Googling "Kevin Dean Linux" returns my site, obviously, and Kevin Dean returns my site 4th on Google. I have a gay porn star to compete with, so I'm quite proud of #4 but working on moving up.

IMHO, this is a flawed poll. Reason: there is a HUGE difference between a geek and a nerd in my mind. It's time to educate those with no distinction between the two.

Lots of people know all kinds of technical stuff. We've got a few PhD students (me too), but that doesn't automatically label you as a nerd. Nerds are dorky, socially challenged goof balls. Some geeks are also nerds, but not all. I also ride a sport bike, am very athletic, like to snow/water ski, etc.

So, I'll admit to being a geek, even a beer geek, but not a nerd.

For work I do social research and multivariate statistics. For fun I brew beer and try to figure out the interactions of multiple beer related variables. Yes I am a little obsessed with brewing....

That's a gorgeous ride. I'll own a Duc someday, but it's a dream deferred until after grad school for sure. I ride a Suzuki SV650, and I love it to death. I put a complete Gixxer front end on it, and I put a 636R shock on the back, along with a double handful of other track-oriented mods to it. There's nothing better at a track day than having some guy on a Gixxer 1K or an R1 blast by my little 70-ish horsepower bike on the front straight, only to pass him on the brakes into T1. :) It's been a great track learning bike, and it's still (sorta) comfortable to commute a little on. Plus, it's a V-twin, so I get along with the harley guys at gas stations. :)

One of my track day buddies got a Duc 749S to replace his stolen track day SV650, and that's just an amazing motorcycle. Someday...

Those SVs seem to be quite the trackday setup. Not too pricey, lightweight and readily available. I couldn't tell what it was in your picture. I was kinda thinking that bike was a Thruxton or similar.
Anyways, yeah, the Ducati I've got now has to last for some time. The wife and kids aren't going to leave anything for me to buy any new bikes for some time. The SS 750ie isn't going to leave any of the modern inline 4s behind, but it's a really well balanced machine, and in my opinion it's the pinnacle of the Ducati 750 line, which has quite a history. Sure it only puts out about 65hp in stock trim, but considering that the engine shares about all the same components with the 900 except for the cylinder and head, this motor is pretty under-stressed and should last for a long time.

Sorry to threadjack. Now back to your regularly scheduled thread...

Keeping it slightly off topic. Not really since we're really just justifying the fact that we're not really nerds. ;)

Beautiful ride ma2brew. I just wanted to comment about a ride I'll be taking next weekend. There will be 5 of us taking a 3 day trip through the "mountains" in Arkansas, my zx-11, a BMW k1200s, a Ducati 1098 (tricolore - beautiful bike!), a VFR, and a Bandit 1200. Should be a great ride! I'll make sure I post some pics.

Got a few photo albums of previous bike trips here if you're interested. http://www.the-sparkmans.net/Photo Gallery/Motorcycle Pictures/index.html

Here you go. Take the nerd test.

38% scored higher (more nerdy),
1% scored the same, and
61% scored lower (less nerdy).

What does this mean? Your nerdiness is:

Low Ranking Nerd. Definitely a nerd but low on the totem pole of nerds

46% scored higher (more nerdy),
2% scored the same, and
52% scored lower (less nerdy).
What does this mean? Your nerdiness is:

Somewhat nerdy. I mean face it, you are nerdier than about half the test takers.

Hey! I couldn't get the link to work. Does that mean I can deduct nerdy points?
