I used an angle grinder to cut the top off a half barrel keg to make a keggle and will be doing the same for my HLT. What is generally done for lids on these things? Or is that just skipped?

Some weld a couple washers onto the area they cut out and use that. I use the lid from my old 5G speckled pot.

Exactly what I use.
Dollar store pizza pan.
Fit my kettles perfectly and just need to add a bolt and wing nut for a handle.

The lid from my 5 gallon pot fits like a glove...it was completely unintentional too.

That's actually the direction I was fearing going since if I wanted one for kettle and one for HLT those things aren't cheap 
This is an old thread but I'll add some advice anyway.
If at all possible, choose/buy/MEASURE your lids before you cut the tops of the kegs...Nothing harder than trying to match lids to an arbitrarily-sized hole.
(or use the keg tops for lids like I just did...)
