Project: Keezer

I found this forum in December while I was trying to decide if I wanted to invest in making my own beer. After some number crunching and biting a huge bullet, I'm proud to say I've been homebrewing since January with 8 batches under my belt already and two of them having been all grain :rockin:


I spent at least two months figuring out what I liked and hated about the keezers and keg-o-rators on here. After countless hours in the show off thread, I started on my project. Here's what I have thus far:

The beginning

picked up a 15cuft kenmore off a a guy on craigslist. $100



Started piecing together the delivery



used it for a while as a fridge after I bought a digital temp controller.... opening the lid everytime is a PITA.



scored this for $40



let the collar begin. I used 2x6 oak.

insulated the collar



a touch of color



wasn't dark enough.... haha



and where I was yesterday:

I bondo'd all of the holes in the lid from the handle and LED to make it completely smooth.



Since the last picture, I have added another coat of stain to clean up some of the thin spots around the top edge. This morning I atached the lid to the collar with some liquid nails.

my intent is to attach the orginal hinges to the bottom of the collar so I don't have to lift the kegs up any further than neccesary, as well as it gives my the lid to help route the lines out of my way.

The bottom half of the keezer will be painted as soon as I puck up 3 more cans of this amazing stuff:




I will add more photos below as I progress.

6/10 update

I attached the collar and ran the two faucets that I have. I'm going to leave it like this until I get the rest of supplies to finish it.

Next up is a coat of black to cover up the remaining white, and some casters on the bottom so I can move it into the house.

Do you have all the shanks, or plugs to fill those holes?

Also, love the tap handle, good score

I have two faucets as of now. I am picking up some caps from fastenal to plug the 6 extra holes until I can get my hands on more.

there is a 9th hole that will be capped as well, but will have a red LED in it to tell me when it's actually on.

My goal is 6 CO2 taps, and 2 Nitro. I love nitro stouts.

Nice, jeasous of the Nitro taps. I just ask because you will lose a ton of cold through those holes, and you are putting the effort now to get insulation in, it'd be pointless without those plugs. Will they all be beer? Or are you planning on any soda taps? Just wondering, the build looks great, I wish you the best of luck.

the holes are already capped off in the back with insulation. So I shouldn't gain any heat at all.

as for the content. During the summer, I will have root beer for the kids, and cider for the wife. The rest will be beer and possibly a soda water keg for mixed drinks.

during the colder months, all beer except maybe the 1 soda water keg if need demands it.

aah, ok. I was just wondering because I'm having an orange pop for SWMBO, and a root beer for me

Does that rustoleum product appear to be pretty chip/scratch resistant? i want to paint mine black, but had read a few times that the appliance sprays are kind of easy to chip.

Don't know if it's just me but the only picture that I can see is the cans of paint.

It seems to be very durable. I accidentally nicked a corner on the garage floor, and it didn't scratch or damage the pain at all. I only put two coats on. More would likely be better. It's just kinda expensive compared to pain. About $9/can.

not sure. I've checked this thread on 4 or 5 different computers. Works for me.

What kind of stain did you use? It looks really good!

How did you get the handle off? Looking at mine I don't see any screws or anything.

glad i saw this thread before i worked on my Keezer. I used the Rustoleum truck bed lining. That stuff is epic! the finish looks great. I did 3 light coats.

Update!


Not sure what happened to my original photos, so ill have to see if I still have them somewhere.


Here is the current state of my Keezer:


I recently added two Perlick Flow-Control faucets...which are freaking amazing!




And here is my new nitro with Guinness handle.

More upgrades to the keezer! Now I need more faucets. 4 isn't cutting it, anymore.
