I've noticed there are a few recipes that say you should put raisins in. Could you use currants or sultanas instead? Is there a reason why? Also could you use dates or prunes, or are these too sweet?

Sure any of those would work. I did a Dubbel that I added some raisins at the end of the boil. Nice subtle flavor addition.

I added 200g dried figs and 200g raisins in this year's dubbel, 10 minutes before end of boil. Next year when i rebrew i'll replace sugar completely with even more dried fruits (plums?, maybe even smoked?, dates?).

The beer came out fine, definitely one of my best brews.
