I've been searching for info on this for a while and haven't found quite what I'm looking for.....

Is there an article/thread anywhere showing a side fermentation chamber connected to a keezer via a tube on the collar? I really like the chamber on top design, but a side box would fit my space needs better. Is this a crappy idea?

It's a great idea.

I used a foam box a la Son of Fermentation Chiller with flexible insulated ducts to supply the cold air from the kegerator. I can get down into the mid 50's empty, and I've been fermenting at 62 degrees all summer.

For ale temps it works like charm. I have long runs and a pretty small fan, so if you shorten the hoses and beef up the fan I would think you could get down to lager temps pretty easy.
