I am making 1.5 gallons of an Old Ruffian Barley wine clone.

It will be an OG of 1.101.

Do I need to make a starter or should one pack of rehydrated notty do the trick??

Any advice would be great. I really want to make a barley wine but dont want to make 3- 5 gallons.

Thanks:mug:

I wouldn't make a starter out of Notty - 1 pack should probably be pretty good.

why not a starter out of notty??

I always hear not to make a starter out of dry yeast; but it is fun to make starters and what does it hurt??

But about the barley wine, you think one pack of nottingham will do it??

Thanks

thanks. I did not know that about the cell wall damage to yeast.

So what do you(s) think about one package of nottingham for this beer???
Thanks:rockin::rockin:

I think a pack of rehydrated notty sure ought to do the job, given the size of the batch.

i got it from BYO magazine:

20.75 lbs 2 row
.5 lb 75L
.5lb victory malt
.25 lbs flaked wheat
3.0 oz chinook 60 min
2oz amarillo 30 min
3.0 ox amarillo 5 min

I scaled it down to make 1.5 gallons as this recipe was for 5 gallons

anyone know hoe much I will boil off during a 60 min brew in which I would like to end up with 1.5 gallons??

How can I calculate that??

I will be boiling on my turkey fryer outside.

Thanks for any info
