Well, my son was sucessful today in the youth hunt in Wisconsin. We have 80 acres just across the border from us here in MI and he loves to hunt there. It was over 80 degrees today, so he wasn't too hopeful but right about 6:00 PM he got this nice doe.

This is the second deer in his second year of hunting.

Oh, deer! When you said 'youth hunt' I thought the revolution had begun. I guess I'll continue to wait for the signal.

Did he bag that with a rifle? Our rifle season doesn't begin until November. Too damn cold for me then. Stiff little Fingers.

Maybe it's the picture, Yoops, but I think my Golden Retriever is bigger than that.

BTW, is that a Bears hat he's wearing?????

No, no bears hat! The deer was bigger than it looks in that picture. It was a medium sized doe. Since today is a government holiday, my husband and I are going to process it today. It's way too hot outside to leave it.

He's wearing shorts (not a kilt!) that we call his Jackass shorts. JA shorts. He looks like a 50 year old golfer in them.

Wisconsin (and Michigan) have had a firearm youth hunt for the last several years. This is the second time he's done it. In Wisconsin, you have to be from 12-15 years old and there is a special hunt for these kids. It gets them out with little hunting pressure from others and an adult must be with them. This would be his last one in Wisconsin, since he's 15 now.

I assume it's the first hunt of the season? This is something that would probably help reverse the decline of hunting in Oregon.

Oh, I figured he got it bow hunting. Congrats to him!

WOW, he's got quite a bit of facial hair for being 15!

No kidding- you should see him when he hasn't shaved! That's about a one week growth. The kids in 7th grade a few years ago called him "mustache man".
He's young (barely 15) to be in 10th grade but it was funny last year when an opposing coach against his hockey team accused him of being a ringer. He was 14, a freshman in high school and 6'2'' with a full beard.

I know alot of people think hunting is barbaric but really it's not when you think about it. Fifelee kind of hit the nail on the head- we have always taught our kids that food does not just come from the grocery store but real animals provide our meat and cheese and other proteins. We have always grown a garden and harvested our own wild rice. Any animals we eat have been not been in a factory farm or slaughterhouse and have been treated humanely. I would NEVER let then shoot or injure something they were not going to eat.

Anyway, this is the first gun hunt in Wisconsin (bowhunting started on September 15) and only available to youths. He can hunt again in November as he still has a buck tag.

Where abouts are you in the Yoop/Wisconsin? I'm heading up to Marquette for some bird hunting later this week. We'll mostly end up killing some beer cans and brain cells. My inlaws have a lake house in Land O' Lakes. Is this youth hunt to help thin the heard? I know the DNR has been talking about thinning the heard near there for quite some time and that sounds like a good way to do it while introducing young people to the sport?

I was trying to think of some smartass comment about hairy but heck he's only 14! But I did find this and just HAD TO SHARE!

I'm right on the WI/MI border, and LOL is about 30 miles from here.

This youth hunt isn't to thin the herd as he still has the same number of tags to fill but it allows the kids to get out there with an adult and have the chance to hunt without much hunting pressure. They are talking about making our area an Earn-A-Buck unit, though, if the herd isn't reduced.

Lots and lots of birds this year- maybe you won't have to shoot beer cans. This has been a great year for grouse (I haven't shot any yet) and I see them all the time. We're going out closer to the end of the month.

There's been talk of an "earn-a-buck" program in the LOL/Wausau area for several years. If CWD hits up there, you'll see summer hunts and "earn-a-buck" programs just like they've done in southern Wisconsin/Madison area.

Yeah, the bird population is really on the rise ... which is good. Where I hunt north of Marquette, they're finally on the upswing of the cycle. Last year was the first good in year in a while and those were lean years.

ahh i love the U.P. my family has a house in South Range plus have a lot of extended family there, cant wait to get back up there this next summer take a few long saunas and grab a pasty or two.
congrats to your son.

Congrats to your boy.

The youth hunt is a great program, period! I would have been so far ahead of the game if it was around back when I was a kid. It truly is the best opportunity to get the adults of tomorrow, hooked on the hunting traditions today.

No hunting presure from the legions of adults hitting the woods in November for firearm season means a chance a whitetail while they are still relaxed and doing there normal daily paterns. Michigan drops the ball in so many ways, but this was a great idea and I am glad we have it.

Nice dog, I mean doe. I'm from Maine and our deer are a lot bigger up here- plus we have do get our doe permit through a lottery and that takes our one and only tag.

But congrats! I've been three years without shooting a deer and I'm really craving some mincemeat...

BTW, I have had a full beard since I was 12, but at least he keeps it respectable looking- unlike hairymanback in the obviously NASCAR picture.

congrats....Ive got a freezer full of meat already. I took a 7 point with my bow oct 14th, and an 8 Point on nov 15th. Now Im only left with a doe tag..

My buddy shot this brute on opening day 11/17. 16 scorable points....I was a little jealous!

Someone at the registration station recognized the deer and sent him a trail cam pic from September.
The left G1 (brow tine) is forked. Pretty cool.

Horn porn is almost as good as beer porn.

Holy cow! (or is that Holy Venison!) That is a huge deer. My son liked seeing that picture just now. It's really cool that you also have the trail cam picture of the same deer. I'm impressed.

Truly a deer of a lifetime for the average hunter. He shot it on some land that his sister just bought. He never even scouted! Adams county WI, just South and a little East of Adams/Friendship.

Are you sure he's 15? Kid's got a phat goatee. That's great he got one - I grew up out here in Oregon hunting and it was a very positive experience for me, although I no longer am into it.

Did he get a little taste of homebrew after this pic?

Haha- yep he's 15. Believe me, I was there when he was born. I was on his case last week about trimming the beard now. He looks like he could be in ZZ Top.

No homebrew for him- he hates beer and wine! I think he'd take a sip of my hard lemonade now and then if let him. He makes root beer occasionally though, and it's really good!

Hey cookie, what did that deer score, and also how did it fair for the state record?

Yooper...looks like that deer hadn't been field dressed yet....whats up with that?

It was field dressed. I think it's just laying funny on the tarp.

He took the deer in for processing and the head just went in to the taxidermist yesterday.

He called B&C and got the names of a few people who will score it. My rough guess would be 170's to 180's. At any rate, it's a really awesome buck!

State record is the "Jordan" buck shot near Danbury in 1914. It held the B&C world record for typical whitetail at 206 1/8 until the "Hanson" buck was shot in Biggar, SK in 1993. That buck holds the world record for typical whitetail at 213 5/8.
