I'm new to electric brewing. Just had a wet test run over the weekend. My element already has a thick layer of something white stuck to it. I'm sure this is normal, but what is it?

That coms off with a green scrubby.

Mine looks the same. It's from hard water. If it bothers you a green scrubby will remove it. Or do a hot recirulation with pbw.

I find dry firing the element cleans it up nicely...though I only clean it that way when I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing.

Well it definitely looks ugly, but it doesn't bother me unless it affects the beer.
