Well, after years of dreaming and a few months of waiting, it is done. My jacketed, stainless, conical fermenter is home!

Here is the completed piece:

I am writing a piece for Zymurgy’s Fall gadget issue, so if you have questions or ideas please let me know!

Can you briefly explain the jacketing and what it does for you? I assume some sort of temp control?

Did you pay the guy on the right in sandwiches(I hope)?

allows glycol to be pumped right next to the wort to keep temps right where you want it

Did these cost just an arm? Or did they charge the leg too? And what are your plans for your old ones?

Yes the jacket is for glycol and temperature control. I now need to work on getting it hooked up to my glycol chiller and so forth.

These guys literally worked for beer, no sandwiches involved! I have know the guy on the left for years and he just did it for me. I will be dropping 6 packs off for years, but thats fine with me.

As for the old ones - that is them! I originally bought them sized and prepared to do this. But then I thought better of the idea and made two units - which I was never really happy with, so I went back to plan A and had them joined.

Now I just need to clean it up and insulate the exterior. I think I will use some closed cell foam.

Maybe it's just the pic, but is that what appears to be a run-of-the-mill $1.19 3-pc plastic airlock on there? (and full of gunk, at that?)

Like a wire-hanger antenna on a Maserati.

(going back to drool over the beer porn now)

It is and the gunk is iodine stain.

I have a different set up involving a blow-off tube and a thermo-well but It is in the garage.

Here is the original drawing that gives a better sense of what I had done:

can I ask why you didnt go with a rotating racking arm?

*edit nevermind....jI could of sworn your old ones had them for some reason

It just seemed to complicate the jacket welding. In my set up I have an elbow go in through the side of the Tri-Clover T. It extends a short distance into the cone and has a T fitting on it so it does not tend to collect junk. I do lose a little beer this way, but I don't sweat it. The bottom of the Tri-Clover T is the dump port.

Ahh I see, pretty cool :rockin:

Now get to it, and get those things filled up with some wonderful wheat beers mmmmmm

;)

ha

Maybe a honey wheat hefe with strawberries and rose peddles!

It is lager time baby. Probably a nice Munich lager or an tasty Oktoberfest.

thats so cool, you can lager in your garage, while living in new mexico in the summertime

very jealous

Nice work
I remember when you posted about the idea of converting your older fermenters.
Kudos on getting it done so quickly and professionally

Cheers

Like every hobby I get into, there is no upper limit. :)

Beautiful work; congrats, Brewpastor.

I had wanted a few better bottles to replace fermenting buckets.

Now I want a glycol chilling system.

Anyone know of a good divorce lawyer, because if I find a glycol chiller, I'll need to find a lawyer too.

So freakin awesome, Brewpastor!

I can see it being a thing to be aware of, but as you point out, I live with about 5% humity. What I am thinking about is how to warm the glycol in the winter so I can keep the beer at the right temperature when the garage is freezing. It could be as simple an in-line electric element, but I haven't worked that out yet!

Well pastor what is your glycol holding tank look like? There are a couple of heater options depending on what you have.
