Anyone tried to make one? I got the idea tonight and thought I'd see if anyone had gone there yet.

Sure, lots of folks have made them. Here's a simple extract recipe I used on my last one -- you can take out the smoked malt and reduce the ABV a bit if you want to be more true to style.

Steampunk
---------
Style: California Common Beer
Batch: 5.00 galPartial Mash

Characteristics
---------------
Recipe Gravity: 1.074 OG
Recipe Bitterness: 30 IBU
Recipe Color: 11° SRM
Estimated FG: 1.019
Alcohol by Volume: 7.2%
Alcohol by Weight: 5.6%

Ingredients
-----------
Cherrywood Smoked Briess Malt 2.00 lb, Grain, Mashed
Light D.M.E. 7.00 lb, Extract, Extract

Cascade 0.50 oz, Whole, 2 minutes
Perle 1.00 oz, Pellet, 60 minutes

California Lager yeast 1.00 unit, Yeast, Wyeast 2112

Notes
-----
Recipe Notes:
Mash grain as normal, boil for one hr with DME and Perle hops. Add Cascade hops at 2 min. Better with 2 weeks secondary, preferably at 50' if possible.

Batch Notes:
Tastes very smoky, with a sweet apply aftertaste. Color is light and creamy.

I started one 1-1-10
I am calling it "beer 10" as it's my first beer of 2010.

i appreciate the thought but this is the gluten free forum ;)

Whoops, totally missed that. That's what I get for being a fan of the "unanswered threads" button.

I can't help but think it would still come out fine, but I've can't say I've made a gluten-free California Common.

the Cal. Common Steam beer style is premised on using lager yeast (Wyeast or WL Cal/SF Lager), specific fermentation temps (~58- 65 degrees) and specific hops (N.Brewer mostly).

*not sure if you can use liquid yeast b/c they might use gluten. check with them.
