Hahahaha nah I was saying I put it in my keg and sealed it... And then I hooked up my co2 tank to it to carbonate it and my tank was empty... I forgot to see if I had any left Hahahahahaha

So I don't want to break the seal of the keg now that it's sealed up Hahahahaha so I have to wait to get more co2 so that I can push beer out of the keg

I had it kegged up for a good hour or so with a bit of priming sugar so it should self carbonate

OH MY ... this damn oatmeal stout came out mighty nice...

i have to see if i can put some in a container... does any one have a growler of some kind

i dont do bottles anymore... they piss me off

I'm thinking around 1pm for Saturday, I have to work that morning. Will be doing the stout, just got my dme for the barleywine this morning.

Og was suppose to be 40-46, I got 44, so gtg. And the yeast was doing it's magic in a very violent way when I got home at 11

Good ****... Well hopefully it will be done around the same time this imperial is ready... Even though it will still be premature but I got to get rid of it by the end of April

so how was primary... or do you keep yours in the same carboy threw out both primary and secondary?

Loads of krausen. Made cold brew coffee for the secondary, racked it, prolly 5 weeks until drinkin time!

ok... so yeah... im excited and upset...

i just tasted the oatmeal...

which i usually do this from the beginning to the end of making beer...

so i can test the differences in the beer as it keeps going... and wow... the oatmeal stout is getting softer and softer... less robust as the days go on... so i am excited...

NOW... on to the IMPERIAL STOUT...

ok... so ... 1.009... final gravity. NO JOKE... should be around 9 percent... less than a true imperial... BUT DAMN THAT ****S GOOD... no joke... i tasted it after putting it in the keg to age and condition... WOW... not carbonated... but still magnificent...

so i know i know... it should sit for another 3 months atleast ... BUT... i am planning on leaving in may... so i have to have this drank by april... which is rushing it for an imperial.... and i am doing a bad thing... but ... its what i got to do... so in a month or two... we will have some beers to get rid of...

be ready for it

I don't know a whole lot about the recent events over there in Japan, but I hope all of you are ok!

Totally fine... Thank u very much for asking ... A buddy of mine in mainland said he had a few scares but for tje most part he said... And i qoute " i never lost my internet porn so i think i will be ok". Hahahahahahahahah so i am guessing for the most part hes still got his sense of humor so he should be fine too.

Thanks for your concern hahahaha

mmmmmm.... looks tasty

i shouldnt have kegged mine and tapped it already... but i think this company that i am talking with wants me to come back to the states sooner... like april...

so i went ahead of schedule so it can get drank...

i think next weekend i will be trying to get rid of it so i can start packing things up and getting things ready for shipment...

how does the java stout taste... i had a kona porter from hawaii the other day... a buddy came back from there a few weeks ago and brought me one... IT WAS NICE

totally not ready... but screw it... i got plans for going back to the states... then maybe making another

Imperial looks good! Java stout round 1 was fantastic! Hot brewed the coffee which apparently is bad, causes bitterness and reduces head retention, but we enjoyed it.... It's all gone lol. Java stout round 2 is where I added 1 lb of lactose and cold brewed the coffee. Better head retention, but a bit too sweet. Think I'll do hot brew with the lactose for round 3. I'm thinking about brewing my apple ale this Sunday if you want to stop by. Did a blood orange coriander Weiss last weekend, that should have a couple bottles ready for ya b4 you leave island.

hahahahah

right on...

well i will try and use the beer gun and bring over some imperial this sunday then... stupid beer gun works when it wants too... half the time it holds the carbonation into the beer the other half the time it just FNCK YOU MAN...

what time sunday...

you want to make a how too video... i got my crane and **** done... so i can hook up the camera and **** and do some decent shots of the brew...

i know people like doing them... i just did a picture how too... but if you guys want we can act a fool in front of a camera and do a video hahahahahaha

wife just said she wants to go watch rango at 1 or 4 on sunday...

and a buddy of mine wants to drink saturday... so... what time you brewing sunday... so i can see if i can get up early enough so that i can go watch the movie with the wife and kid... and ... does your wife want to hang out with the wife and kid...

Cancel brewing for sunday, swmbo had made plans without telling me :(

SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED... HAHAHAHAHA cant lie ... i had to google that one...

but no worries... i ended up going to the movies with the wife and kid and eating dinner with them... been awhile since we had a day off anyways...

maybe next sunday or something... i actually work this saturday night...

well... i need to dispense of some beer next weekend... so if you want to brew i can come over after a nap and bring whats left in the keg hahahaha and try and drink it...

Hope you guys don't mind me posting but...first and last time I brewed 10 years ago it ended up tasting like bandaids. I'd really like to get my feet wet again before laying out the cash on my own set-up , if anyone needs some help give me a pm...:tank:...will work for beer...:rockin:

Hello Okinawa brewers! I am new to the site and I realize this thread is nearly dead but I'll ask anyways.

I have only brewed using LME (Mr Beer) and I really want to step my game up a bit. The only problem I have is that I leave here in a month or so. What I would love to do is to sort of Audit/help in a all grain brewing experience so when I go back to the states I will have an on hand knowledge on what I'm doing, what to buy etc. Anyone willing to help me out would be much appreciated. PM me so I can get in contact with whomever. Thanks!

Damn missed me by 2 days, just brewed an all grain Brown Ale Monday. I may be brewing this weekend or next weekend again but after that I leave for the PI for 6 weeks. PM me your email and I will let you know when I brew again. I work on Courtney as well.

Hey,

So I just stumbled on this forum after searching on where to get my CO2 tank filled. It seems this thread has been dead for a bit, but figured it was worth a shot asking. Anyone left out there still brewing in Oki? I'm pretty new to the island and looking for fellow brewers. Lemme know, thanks!

Awesome, glad to hear! Just sent my request to join the group. Okano Gas Co pretty easy to get to? Any updates on prices (testing/adapter vs. rental/adapter)? I think I may try to drive by in the next few days to get my tank filled. I have my first batch made here, an IPA, waiting to be carbonated.

I think that is the same place I got my tank, north side of Kadena. It cost $200 for a 6kg tank with adapter and $100 deposit, 15,000 Yen. They speak little to no English.

Here's a pic of the tank, I had to move it outside my keezer it is so damn tall. On the plus side I am at almost a year on 1 tank w/ 3 taps :ban:

15,000 yen, ouch. A bit steep, but worth it for good beer. Nice set-up! I'm still trying to figure out a more permanent solution for chilling/storing my beer. I have one of those tiny Japanese fridges at my place and the BX's mini-fridges seem too small for my corny keg. I'll have to keep my eye out for a small freezer on okinawayardsales.

Foster furniture store has chest freezers (5 and 7cft). Freezer/ fridges go pretty damn quick on Bookoo. I'm trying to get a 7 or 9cft to upgrade.

I have been on island for about 1.5 years, but between watching the kids and doing school my homebrewing has halted for a bit. I only brew extract kits because I do not have the setup for anything else, but they are tasty. As soon as we move on to Kadena, I am going to start an Altbier and buy a keg kit to get started with that.

I'm on Kadena (work on Courtney), if you ever want to stop by to brew or have a brew just let me know. Hopefully brewing a Barley Wine this weekend and a Dunkelweizen and IPA in the upcoming weeks!

Brewing tomorrow (Monday) around noon. Haven't decided what I will be brewing (Barley Wine, Dunkelweizen, English IPA or IPA) but will definitely brew something. Porter, Stout and English IPA on tap... stop by have a brew and help brew. 9340C Jennings.

Hey Guys,
I'm an all grain brewer moving to Futenma in about 5 months. Looking forward to fermenting on the other side of the world. I'm trying to figure out what things to move and what to leave and was wondering if you had any advice. I've already decided I'm leaving my homemade three-tier structure because it's too awkward to move with, but I'm taking the kettles and burners.

My biggest questions are:
What home brew equipment and ingredients can't be shipped there?
Should I take my 20# CO2 tank?
Do they have US style propane tanks out there?
How's the water quality out there? What should I bring to treat it?
Any legal ramifications I should know about?
Why isn't there a homebrew club?

Thanks, see you soon.

Welcome, you are going to love the island. Now, I haven't brewed in almost a year....new baby, still trying to get a routine before I get cracking again. But to answer some of your questions from my point of view. I haven't had any equipment or ingredients I couldn't ship here....from Midwest, they are the only distributor I have had luck with so far. 20# tank is fine if you get the adapter for Japanese tanks to get it filled at the gas co. You can also just rent tanks from liquor stores, your choice, still need the adapter to fit your american regulator. AAFES sells American propane tanks. I get my water filled at pay by the gallon filler stations on base. 25 cents/gallon for reverse osmosis. Legal ramifications??????It is "illegal" to brew anything over 1% here, but not enforced. I do not know of anyone who has gotten into any trouble, and if you are not selling, I am sure you will be fine. There is a homebrew club on facebook I do believe. I think....not sure. Okinawa Homebrewers may be it. Anyways, hope to see you around!

I get everything shipped from MoreBeer in SoCal no problem (haven't tried liquid yeast but some do)
I would leave the CO2 tank at home, the stores here won't refill it. There are a couple options for gas on island, but as loadtoad said, you will have to buy an adapter to fit US regulators. I rent a 12kg tank for my 3 tap keezer.
No worries about the propane. $19 per tank w/ a $20 deposit required for the first tank on base.
I use the same RO water loadtoad mentions plus I have a tap water filter if I don't make it to the water dispenser.
No legal worries.
Homebrew club is on FB https://www.facebook.com/groups/229146713798200/ Okinawa Brewing Enthusiasts Entertainment and Recreation.

May want to reconsider the brew structure especially if you are used to it. Once you get settled in you will miss it! I've been here a year and a half and wish I had brought mine. Have rigged up a temp junk stand but it's not the same.

Let me know if you need any more info, look forward to sharing a homebrew with you.

I also just arrived here on Okinawa (Kadena). I've been thinking about homebrewing for a few years now and finally just purchased some equipment to get me started.

Hey, I am stationed in Tokyo and wanted to know if you knew where I could find one of those Co2 adapters. Either one for the tank or one for the regulator, either way is fine. I have been looking for weeks but all I found was a place that rented out tanks, but not regulators. The problem being that my regulator is US standard.
