North Carolina banned Everclear as of yesterday. I've never once used it but I'm pretty annoyed, as I'd been considering it for making limoncello, among other things. Kind of makes me want to start producing it at home...

The main concern is with college students and binge drinking. They don't want anybody to get hurt. Understandable, but I think it's stupid to try to idiot-proof the world (natural selection?) and punish everybody for a couple kids' dumb mistakes.

Sorry for the mini-rant.

More Knee-Jerk reaction to the whole 4 loco deal I suppose.

No big deal. It's still pretty widely available in "Mason jars" around here anyway. The only difference is that now the state won't make any tax revenues.

You know what happens when you make something idiot proof?

Someone builds a better idiot.

That which does not kill us makes us stronger. Friedrich Nietzsche.

Just what we need, stronger idiots.

It hasn't been available in PA for years. I bought some last year when out of state. I use it for herb and spice infusions to add to beers in secondary.

It's been illegal here since long before I could drink. But wait, KY is less than 2 hours away. Not that big of a deal since I don't really drink liquor anyway, but I agree that it's dumb to idiot proof everything. T'is the American way though.

I didn't know it was illegal anywhere. Is it just everclear brand or is it all grain alcohols?

COMPLETELY OT, but....Nietzsche said that? I love Nietzsche and can totally see that in his philosophy but I never knew that.

As for the everclear...it's been illegal here in PA for quite some time. I have a bottle of everclear and it's been used for...let's see....

oh...and killing ticks :)

Still have half a bottle after two years...

You couldn't post a BIGGER picture could you? :) I mean I'm only needing to scroll for 5 minutes to attempt to read the posts in here.

I usually resize my pics down to like 400X500 pixels or so to post on here. Makes it easier for folks to actually read posts and reach buttons without scrolling to the right.

haha sorry revvy I was under the impression that the forum would automatically resize it for me :)

it's since been resized!

Yipes, I'm thinking back to my ever clear drinking days (all three of them:cross:)

I never support bans. Like most people, I don't miss drinking ever clear, but I'd love a bottle of Sam Adams Utopias for giggles. Alas , it is apparently illegal in Washington state :-/

Why don't they outlaw smoking if they are so interested in protecting us from ourselves?

As if college kids can't binge drink on 80 proof liquor or even PBR.

The stupidity of bans like this is just astonishing.

ahh man .. last time I was at the ABC store I passed it and it called out to me, now I know why ...

Astute. However, a total smoking ban will happen in NC last, not first. That state was built on big tobacco.

Not sure if we are last or not, but NC has banned smoking indoors in all buildings that are open to the public. Restaurants, stores, bars, everywhere.

I for one love it! The difference in this case, is that the smoking ban isn't so much about protecting people from themselves as it is about protecting people from other inconsiderate people.

They are not interested in protecting "us from ourselves" they are interested in protecting "us from other people". I love to have a good time but why do some people haft to drink grain alcohol to have a good time?

Why not go somewhere that people aren't smoking. Who's the inconsiderate person, the one smoking in a smoking establishment, or the one forcing them to stop because they want to hang out in the smoking establishment?

Where? Chances are if you're part of this forum you like to go out to grab a good beer and some good food to go along with it. The only types of places (before the PA smoking ban) to do this in were kids restaurants and sectioned off areas in others. It's ridiculous that paying customers should have to put up with other peoples disgusting habits.

The no smoking law here is the best thing to happen to the restaurant industry recently...in fact many restaurants (and bars) started the no smoking policy early. I remember walking into an old local pub that I used to frequent a few weeks after they enacted the no smoking policy and it was GREAT. You could actually smell the wood and mustiness of the old building, and fully appreciate and taste the beers and food.

I don't care if it's "inconsiderate" of the state to step in and ban smoking....it's a health benefit for everyone and makes for a much more pleasurable dining experience for the entire public. Want to smoke? Go outside....not that big of a deal.

Because they saw there was demand. There never should have been legislation, it should have been left open to the owners.

Personally I knew of lots of places to go grab a good beer and good food where there was no smoking before the ban in both Oregon and Arizona (I got the pleasure of witnessing both take effect, and run a couple of my favorite pubs out of business in both cases). If PA didn't have these places, then it was due to a lack of voice from the non smoking community, or short sited business owners.

I don't go into a burger king looking for a 5 star meal, why should I walk into a dive bar looking for a smoke free atmosphere?

Oh yeah, and the whole banning beverages to prevent binge drinking? Please... 40's of Mickey's are still under $4 where I live. We need to change the culture, where such things are looked down on before anything will start to change.

More or less I stand for personal freedoms up until the point where they start infringing on other's personal freedoms. If you want to change something, then convince people you're right, change their attitudes and everything else will fall in place.

P.s. I don't smoke or drink Everclear.

Maybe they just like grain alcohol. Maybe it's cheaper. Maybe it's for medicinal purposes. Who knows. Who cares?

You don't like it? Don't drink it.

Ah now I get it:( Benjamin Franklin would be proud. This country was founded on libertarianism whether you like it or not. We have a government so HUGE now that they basically can tell us when to walk, talk and take a cr@p....... Its not really about grain alcohol (I would never touch the stuff personally) its about a bloated socialist leaning government telling me what I can and cannot ingest, yes ingest as in put into my own body. That was NEVER what our founding fathers wanted! I apologize for the rant but I am really toasted about everything the government does lately. Oh well time for another beer:D

That's what I am struggling with though. Smoking has caused exponentially more deaths than grain alcohol, so following the same logic, should not it be banned also? While we are at it lets ban motorcycles, contact sports, skydiving, cage fighting and power-assisted hang gliding. OBTW, I heard a story of an old guy having a heart attack soon after nutting, so I guess that's it for casual sex........:D

Why should you have any say whatsoever on how a business owner operates his own business. You don't assume any financial gain or loss with his business. If you don't like it, start your own business. Obviously there was a market for it.

I just hate when the government steps in and forces rules upon a business owner who assumes all of the risk in his business model. If these new rules impact the business, the government doesn't care because it assumes zero risk if the business succeeds or fails. If patrons stop going to bars because of the smoking ban, then the only person to suffer is the man who has the most to lose.

P.S. I don't smoke.

I'm sympathetic, but we are well past this. Your efforts are probably best spent trying to maximize your own freedom within the system. Hopefully the people who do this will gravitate toward one another like the last cheerios in a bowl of milk.

Are we past it? Maybe that's part of the problem. We give up so damn easy nowadays. Just don't take away my blackberry or my PS3, right?

I don't have either of those, but I understand where you're coming from. It's just a question of where to put my efforts. I can struggle in vain against hundreds of millions of people, or focus on my own life to expand my available choices.

...I can struggle in vain against hundreds of millions of people, or focus on my own life to expand my available choices.
But its not "hundreds of millions of people", its several hundred in a capitol that "think" they know how we should live our lives. Again, I do not drink everclear, no do I ever plan to, but the problem I have is that a handful of people in a far-off capitol believe they can legislate a "better and safer me". It is a bit frightening to think that every day they take a little bit more of our freedoms away from us.

or we could just shoot 545 specific people and be free again
