I've never done a recipe of my own and really would like to give it try. I wanna make an Irish Red with Nottingham Yeast (maybe), have it around 6.5 to 7 % ABV, and around 65-75 IBUs (maybe). I was, also, hoping to not break the bank on hops- they're $2.50 an ounce at the lhbs. Any suggestions?

if your concerned with price of hops you might want to pick a different style. my last ipa used 8 oz and only hit 48.7 ibu. that's not to say there are not hops that will hit that with less quantity. i got my hops from freshhops but i bought pound of them which lowered my price to like 1.85/oz. where you thinking extract or all grain

All Grain. Mostly just seeing how a recipe gets built from scratch...

i highly suggest Designing Great Beers by Ray Daniels - great book to help with recipe formulation

I also like to read a bunch of the recipes here for any given style when I'm working on a new recipe. Another helpful tip is to look up clone recipes of your favorite beers so you can see what components go into beers that you like.

Def should buy your hops in bulk - IPA isn't just about bitterness but a big hop flavor and aroma. Farmhouse brewing has great prices without having to buy by the pound but they aren't shipping until the end of the month.

if you search for bulk hops you can find a list of other places that are commonly used. Nikko brew is doing a $10 / 1lb sale right now on a few varieties which is a great deal.

Here's an extract recipe I made up that was well received. 2.25 gal batch (Mr Beer FV)

79.5% Light DME 4lbs
9.9% American 2 row 1/2lb
9.9% Carmel/Crystal 80L 1/2lb
.3% Chocolate Malt 2oz
.3% Roasted Barley 2oz

The hops I used were probably a bit much for what you are going for.

I had...
1/2 oz saaz @ 60min
1/2 oz saaz @ 5min

10 day dry hop w/
1oz whole simcoe
1oz pellet ahtanum

Lots of aroma, great imperial red.

Nice. We'll have to trade a brew sometime. I just finished the red I had but I need to make some more. I brewed a couple of beers that the BCM neighbors could drink and well...they did, so I need to get to brewing and will be stepping up to 5 gal very soon.

How about adapting this to suit? Raging Red Irish Red Ale

...it's had good reviews. I've currently got a more hoppy version of this in the Fermenter at the moment and will probably adapt it further into the IPA realm.

Good luck!

brewnz- I may use some aspects of that recipe and some of Glynn's. Thanks! Looks awesome
