Just built a prechiller. Can anyone with experience tell me if it's better to fill the bucket with the prechiller with just ice or with ice and water?

Ice and water. It will increase the surface area in contact with the cold.

Also, don't add the ice until you've already cooled the wort most of the way. You want to add it when you're trying to get below the ambient temperature of your water. I usually add it when I get down to around 80F-85F. Let your water do most of the work for you, then add the ice.

If you do this make sure the water keeps flowing while you add the salt. It will get cold enough to freeze the water in the prechiller.

Sorry I was asleep during chem101. Does saltwater have a lower freezing point? Is that why it's beneficial to use salt with ice water?
