black ale

looking for a good extract black ale recipe:rockin:

1554 clone is very good here is a base recipe


6.5 lb Pale Malt Extract

1 lb Debittered Black Malt

.5 lb 30 L Crystal Malt

1 oz Styrian Goldings(60 minutes)

1 oz Styrian Goldings (15 minutes)

1 oz Styrian Goldings (0 minutes)

Yeast Safbrew T-58

If you can't find debittered Black Malt, use Carafa III, or chocolate wheat.

Even though I didnt start this thread...thanks so much for the recipe!!! Definitely a fan of 1554. Recently bought an excellent Scottish black ale called "Old Engine Oil" by Harviestoun Brewery. The label is awesome...it says "Viscous, chocolately, roasty". It was all of the above, and more!!

2X Coopers stout kits
1kg dextrose
1oz Hallertau hops (dry hop)
Top up to 23L

Looks good I am gonna look for the debittered black malt next trip to LHBS.

why t-58? wouldnt that provide a "belgiany" flavor?

Yeah, it would be a good idea to use both packets.
