I foolishly downloaded 2009 Anniversary Edition. Boy did it suck.

The installation was really bad, it took 3 tries and it didn't remember that I have a licensed version on my PC.

I ran a scan with the new software. Graphics sucked. After the scan it found a uninstall file that it wanted to remove. I selected ignore and it still removed it from my PC.

Then it would NOT let me uninstall it, I had to go through the control panel application to do the uninstall.

I'm back on 2007 version. I've got 56 days until it expires....

Do you guys have a preferred Ad scanner that you could recommend?

I will never use 2009 AE.

I've been using malwarebytes for a while now and have no gripes -> Malwarebytes.org

A big +1 here. Not only do I have no gripes about it, I would go as far as to say it is the #1 free spyware/virus remover. I work on PC's for a living, and spyware/viruses come up often. I have used tons of different programs with varying success, but none have worked as well as malwarebytes.

Oh yah, I remember around Xmas trying to put it on my mom's PC.

The "FREE" version is not really free. They wanted you to buy a subscription to netflix or sign of for some kind of credit card. There were pages of whole bunch a crap you needed to sign up for to complete the install.

What BS.

They REALLY did go down hill.

Would you recommend using more than one type? (Just to cover your butt.)

I do personally. I also use Spybot. However, I don't know if the spyware programmers have figured out Spybot's code or what, but it seems like Spybot is removing less and less stuff everyday.

In short though, yeah, you might as well use more than one.

I ran back to back scans with Ad-Aware vs Malwarebytes.

Ad-Aware went first; 2 infections found

Malwarebytes went second; 24 more infections!!!

Ad-Aware missed them. I'm sold!! Its seem Malwarebytes will do a better job.

I've been running Spy-Bot and Spyware Terminator for about a year. I got rid of Ad-Aware after talking to my brother (who does 'puter graphics for a living) and a repair shop that we brought SWMBO's 'puter to, both ripped Ad-Aware. The Repair shop told me about Spyware terminator, saying that's what everyone there uses.

I run kaspersky internet security 2009, it is defiantly the best all in one protection software on the market right now.

That or linux

im a spybot man myself. the newer version runs in the background pre-eliminating the junk that the old version would weed out of you temp files. Along with Ccleaner and Avast ive yet to have any issues with this 3 way combo. OPEN SOURCE and FreeWare FTW!

Sweet Jesus! What are you doing? Downloading pOrN off the IRC?

Most of the infections are tracking cookies. Usually 1 of 25 is a critical item. I scan about once a month.

You would be surprised how many tracking cookies you can get. I scanned mom's pc and found over 300. I doubt she was surfing for p0rn. :D

I lurve me some spybot as well. I also use Avast! Antivirus. With both of those running it's taken my PC from having more viruses than a Haitian hooker on vacation in South Africa to a high priced call girl from downtown.

I've been using AVG for a while now, but the most recent update is crummy. I can't pin it on AVG but I've gotten several .dll files missing errors after running scans. The programs are things I've never heard of (qmslortw???) and searches don't bring up any results for them as known viruses (or known anythings for that matter) I found a work around to the missing .dlls by turning off the application that looks like the missing dll in the start-up menu. Everything I read says missing .dll files are usually from incomplete un-installs, but for all of them to pop up after I run a virus scan makes me suspicious of AVG. I'll be switching.
:off: Any body have a better explaination for my errors?

Terje

I run 2 programs. One is Ccleaner and the other is a squared. Ccleaner is nice in that it has a registry cleaner that has given me no problems on all my computers. I use Avast for anti virus. I really like its ability to do a boot scan.

Not entirely. I haven't had to worry about adware or viruses since 2001, and I don't remember adware being a concern at all before that... so. Nope.

Try down loading this free program, then run a scan.

Malwarebytes.org

I bet it'll find a hundred if not several hundred infections on your PC.

My mother bought a new PC about a year ago. Right after New Years, I down loaded AD-Aware before the crappy 2009 AE version came out. Anyhow, she had something like 256 infections and one was a trojan virus. I doubt Mom was looking for porn on the internet.

Others who know more about this can tell you all the details. I understand that there are malicious websites that will latch onto to your PCs bandwith and rob your PC of performance. Or something like that... I guess its usually the advertisers. I don't much about why this happens. There is a enough IT people here you can tell you all about it, I'm sure.

Try malwarebytes. I liked how it looks and ran.

Hmmmm. Have you not been infected with the Mac virus?

I use AVG (AVG Free - Download antivirus and antispyware software for Windows XP and Vista) , Norton 360 (purchased), Spyware Blaster (SpywareBlaster | Prevent spyware and malware. Free download.), and CCleaner (CCleaner - Home) .

I set most to run automatically each night while the machine is idle.

I gave up on Ad-Aware when I Dl'd a new version that never would update. That really oisses me off, especially because I am one of those that do actually donate.

No I was serious. I haven't had to worry about any of that in a long time. And I really don't understand why any of you put up with having to battle it.

I'd like to see what results you get from a malwarbytes scan. I bet you have hundreds of infections. Unless, of course you run some other program that cleans them out.

Are you a Mac user?
