just found the site.doing a brown (nut) ale i racked the brew to the secondary and no bubbling was taking place so i added a bit of yeast nutrient to spark things up. then got thinking about it and am wondering if i even need to rack to a secondary? the reciept didn't mention it but i am about 5 years rusty on brewing and did it as a matter of routine???

How long was it in primary? No bubbling in secondary is a good thing, it should be fermented out before you transfer.

As far as if you NEED to rack to secondary? Not necessarily. Wheat beers and lighter ales are often fine after 10-14 in primary, but stronger beers and specialty beers often need a secondary.
