I was interested in trying some de-husked carafa II as a substitute for roasted barley in my next stout. Does any know if the barley is malted before roasting for this grain? Midwest Supplies lists carafa II as similar to roasted barley but I don't know if they just mean Lovibond rating.

By the way, how do you pronounce carafa? Lke giraffe or caramel?

"Weyermann Carafa II® is a chocolate type malt. Lovibond is 375-450 deg L. Great in dark ales or lagers. Use in bock, stout, porter, alt and schwarzbier."

Haven't used II, but III (470L) is definitely not a substitute for roasted barley.
