Need Help With Mill Motor

Ive recently got my MM3.2.0 and i want to motorize it.. i have no idea mechanically how to do this and what im looking for when trying to get a motor.. im looking for some heads up or pointers or a direction from the good guys ( you ) with some help in that department..

I went to Tractor Supply and picked up a motor, ordered a large pulley wheel off of eBay, and then got a belt to mount in between the 2 pulleys. I used a 3/4 hp motor, but when I built mine, I built it to mill grain for the club in my area.

yah i looked there but everyone has differenent motors... like i can't just type in a motor on ebay and buy that.. cause i have no idea what im looking for

EDIT: I don't know if that motor is reversible, or what your mill specifications are and wether you need a reversible mill or not. So, do some research on that aspect, but the other neccesary specifications for motor are all there.

I went round and round with this looking for a motor with a slow enough speed for my barley crusher.

Ended up with one of these for 38 bucks on sale:

I couldn't ask for anything more, Can turn it to run as slow as 50-60rpm or faster. Has a lock that you can engage to keep it running without holding the trigger down. You could easily mount it to a board next to the mill

is this a motor ?? i don't know what specs im looking for.. i have the MM2-3.0 and gunna mount the motor under a SS table..

I am going to piggy back here, what about adding pullys to increase motor speed? I have a motor that has a ton of torque but runs at 1.25 RPM which could take a while to crush grain. Is this feasabile to ramp up the speed?

You can. Not sure how much faster you can make it. Also, your torque will diminish as the speed increases.

that is a 90V DC motor - you CANNOT plug it into the wall, it requires 90V of DC power. Houses are typically 120V AC power.
If you have an electrician friend, it could be converted - it will require an isolation transformer, a bridge rectifier, and a smoothing capacitor.

you can poke around here for something like this for $30:




- you can probably take that fan off the back...68rpm isn't fast, but the torque is plenty high, you can dump your grain into your hopper and walk away while it does the job...

You should not buy a motor (unless direct drive) for more than 20 dollars. 1750 110ac motors are so common.

Go to the local scrap yard. I picked up a 1725 rpm, 1/4 horse for 3 bucks. They sell them by the pound. If it ever goes bad (which it probably won't if you pick out a good one) sell it back for scrap and buy another one.

I have the MM3 2.0 and I ended up buying three motors before I got one that would work. You will need 80 in-lb or more torque and want somewhere around 150-300 rpm. The first motor I bought only had 40 in-lb at 220 rpm and it would get stuck with only a hanful of grain thrown in. All of the motors I bought I had setup as direct drive. This is just my experience. dang... i have no clue about motors.

I assume you would be looking for a motor with the following specifications:

120 V (sometimes noted as 110 V)
60 in-lb (or more torque - I would go with 70 or more probably)
AC motor, not DC

From researching during my motorization I think you want 150-300 RPM.The motor can be geared down but I suggest direct drive if possible.

This motor I would assume would be 1/3 HP.

yah.. well i don`t want direct drive cause i wanna mount my motor underneath my stainless steel table and have the mill on top so i can have a table to put grains on or anything.. and hide the motor...

maybe il just outbid this guy and pay way to much on ebay for a motor but atleast i know its one i can use...

Yah I got a stainless steel prep table I'm using as my motorized grain mill I just don't know anything about motors that's all..

You could probably use a bench grinder. Already wired for ac power but might need to mod it some.
