I made a 1 quart starter for a weizenbock the other day using wyeast 3056. I didn't have any wheat dme so I just used regular extra light dme. It took about 10 hours to get going and never really got a whole lot of krausen. However it is now bubbling happily away.
Should I have used wheat dme? is the slow start and small krausen a warning sign of a poor starter?
I used:
1 cup extra light dme
1 quart boiled then cooled water
1 packet wyeast 3056 pitched into starter 3 hours after smacking the internal pack

If you decant the starter before using it, who cares what DME you used?

Depending on gravity, a one quart starter is not going to be enough yeast for a Weizenbock. Use yeastcalc.com to figure out what you need.
