The price of carrots.

• Local Supermarket £1.99 for 500g (cleaned and in a bag of co2/nitrogen)
• Local market £1.99 for 1kg (cleaned piled high)
• Local farm shop £1.99 for 5kg (dirty in a box)
• Local animal feed store £1.35 for 15Kg. (cleaned in a net sack)
• From my allotment - free (but I've run out)

What's the different?
Packaging and marketing, food miles (distribution) and profit!
They are all the same variety out of the same local soil by the same farmers.


Carrot whiskey.
Carrot pate'
Carrot and coriander soup.
Carrot dog food and chicken feed.
Carrots with my Sunday Lunch.
Carrots in Irish stew.

Carrot whiskey ?????

It's called "Value adding"


If I wash the carrots, the price goes up
If I put them in a nice bag with a twist tie, the price goes up
If I purge said bag of oxygen, the price goes up
If I turn the carrots into a cake, the price goes up

Most companies have positions whose sole purpose is to find a way to "value add" their products.
Thats how we ended up with canned beans ( no need for an overnight soak ), cake mixes, frozen dinners, etc ....

There is some of this.

Most of it though is pricing to the market.
1st rule of business. Charge what you can get away with.

Public perception is at play as well.
People pay what for what they get and for in the case of the supermarket the nice lifestyle of the share holders and execs of the supermarket, processing plant and distribution company.
Of the £1.99 at the supermarket less than £0.05 will be paying for the actual carrots.

I guess I'm just lucky that a ton of stuff is grown in California. Carrots are dirt cheap. And avocados. Lemons...sometimes we don't even buy them. Everyone with a backyard from the mid 50's has them growing, like my MIL.

My backyard as a kid had Oranges, lemons, plums and apricots.

I grow what I can but from October to May it's very sparse.
No chance of any fruit outside of summer/early autumn and nothing exotic.

My mom would make homemade apricot and plum jam, and orange marmalade. I miss that apricot tree. I would climb it as a kid. It was cut down.

we had this huge cherry tree in the back yard round about june every one of my friends and i would spend the day in that tree eating cherries and spitting pits at each other. neighbor across the street had a half dozen mulberries also.

People are so ignorant. I had a friend who had this apple tree in his back yard. Produced tasty apples but they were ugly because he didn't take care of it. So he cut it down. At the time he was buying all these apples at the store. Now look at the price of apples.

I have a blanket of snow over the rest of the Carrots and the Parsnips.
