I have the means and the ingredients to do an authentic iceberg lager beer.

I start by getting some ice from this monster.

And melting it.

I make a gallon starter of WY2206 from the melted ice water.

And I'm well on my way to be ready to mash this Sunday.

That's awesome! What a great idea. That reminds me of Dogfish Head's Pangea with water from Antarctica. I'll bet Sam Caligione would be jealous. Would you be able to brew this periodically? How often do icebergs pass by your neck of the woods?

Well no, they pass by this time each year, but they aren't always accesable to me
as they are this year. This season has seen an abundance of bergs close to land and in our bays. They break up and beach themselves where I can get access to the ice.

No it isn't salty either. The ice in the bergs are formed by snow being compacted over thousands of years and it is all fresh water. During its journey here which takes a few years from calfing to showing up here, it melts and any salt on it from the salt water is rinsed off by the melting.

The only testing I have done is to taste it. I did do an extract batch 3 or 4 years ago and it was great. No detectable taste difference, but the bragging rights were right on. I expect the same from this batch.
With this ice I did get a full glassful and drink it. Tasted like clean water.
Just 10,000 years old:mug:

This is a picture I took yesterday of a berg grounded in Conception Bay.

And this is my starter today.

I like it, nice pics. Thanks for sharing! You should edit the post title, before opening the thread, I would have never thought you were using "real" icebergs. Hah, way to cool, hah no pun intended.

And that is one of the many reasons why homebrewing rocks.

Very cool.

Most people see an iceberg and think it's a hunk of ice. Only a brewer sees it and starts forming a recipe around it!

To update;

I brewed yesterday and got OG of 1046 and IBU's of 35.

I mashed at 150f and got a ph of 5.3 without any salts additions.
It is starting to form a krausen although it was blowing co2 out of it from 3 hours after pitching. It is fermenting at 47f.

Some more porn.

As the fermentation progresses. I'll post more porn.
