Doing my first partial mash tonight (time permitting) -- what's the best way to measure efficiency in a small-ish brewpot which is not deep enough for a hydrometer or a large wine thief sample? (I'm boiling 3.5-4 gallons)

My instinct it to just siphon some out into the wine thief. Let me know if there's a better/simpler "duh" solution that I"m missing.

thanks,
chris.

Do you have a hydrometer flask? I just ladle the wort into the flask with a deep spoon or ladle and then measure away.

Siphoning seems like too much effort for such a small sample.

Hmmm, I've always done it in a wine thief -- I always figured the hydrometer flask would be too short to take a reading, but I guess since it's always going to be floating at least a little bit, I don't need to worry about it hitting bottom.

Thanks,

chris.
