ok...so, I am trying to re-use this as I am writing this!

I made a 5 gallon batch using malt extracts, and it was ready to bottle today!

I bottled most of it, then used the rest to put in the "home draft" container!

I checked to see how much priming sugar it would need first....added it......then filled it with beer (not all the way, obviously)!

Once it is close to being finished, I will see if I can find a CO2 cartridge that fits and give it a try!

Cool! Let me know how it comes out. I had put sanitizer in it just to test it and it's pretty much dead now and there's easily half the container left. The first few pulls off it I got carbonated santizer. I curious if you'll be able to dispense all of it since you are "bottle conditioning" in the container.

well, I don't have a CO2 cartridge in it, but it is dispensing beer out of it.

I think I had put a little more sugar in it and filled it up a little too much.

It was pretty hard when you tried squeezing the sides!

It is working!

My biggest question is can you do a secondary fermentation with the dispenser tap in place? Or do you need to use a screw cap like Tap A Draft and then add the dispenser after the secondary is complete?

Who knows so far?

I came home yesterday to find an empty Coors Light Home Draft contraption on my porch. So naturally, I took it inside and grabbed my trusty Leatherman. I got a new one, btw. The one with locking tools. Is good, ya. Anyway.

After monkeying with it a while, I got on HBT and found this here thread. Sure enough, the CO2 cartridge holder comes right off with the help of channel lock pliers.

The tamper proofing on it is weak sauce. It's two plastic tabs that squeeze in as they pass over some spline like teeth. The teeth go one way and when you try to turn against them, the plastic tabs grab onto the spline/teeth. Using the pliers breaks the plastic tabs. The holder and the tap are threaded. The holder screws back in fine. I'm betting the tab to spline/teeth deal is just tamper proofing to stop people from reusing it. Maybe use some thread tape or a washer to snug it up if you feel like it.

Is pellet gun or paint ball gun CO2 safe to use with something I'm going to drink?

Well this expirement has gone well. Did secondary fermentation with the stock dispenser in place and no leaks. Tapped an American Weizen over the weekend and this thing is working very well. Hoard these vessels while you can.

My neighbor works for Miller/Coors and he is good friends with the lady in charge of this product line here in CO. She and many of her friends have acknowledged the reuse opportunity of this product. The C02 holder can be unscrewed by hand or with pliers.

She did warn of using the C02 for paint guns/air rifles/pistols/bike inflators. You can find Food grade C02 at your local HBS, food service store or online. This is the 16 gram size. Having been in the medical field for a number of years, I would suggest spending the extra dollar to buy this as many contaminants can find their way into canisters and make dirty gas. Not that it WILL happen. But in CAN happen. You can use smaller cartridges but will have to fill the void of the smaller cartridge with something pretty firm like a piece of plastic or wood. Paper towel can get pushed out of the way and the gas will just leak out.

BTW the caps for the Tap-A-Draft system will work for your secondary fermentation. might prolong the life of the dispenser on the Coors Light Home Draft system.

can you get these in Iowa??? I have not seen them were i live. What a suprise they still have 80s hair do's

Here be pics.

Home Draft Tap. The CO2 cartridge holder screws into this.

well i just emptyed in and the tap came off easy and everyone is right channel locks or vice grips but it will work use sanistar or idaphor to clean it out and sanitize

Has anyone seen these in Iowa yet? I asked at the hy-vee and they said they didnt know if or when they would get them.

I hear tell that food grade CO2 cartridges of this size are available at adult bookstores. You know, porn stores. Whack shacks. Peep shows. Jack booths. Apparently, some people really like the smell of CO2 cause I'm told they sniff it. People are strange.

:p

That would be nitrous they use them for whip cream canasters. you know whippits. I dont believe they are the same thing

if you plan on reusing it, and your the one who bought it (or at least there when setting it up). can you unscrew the CO2 first, and modify it, so it doesnt break when you try to unscrew it after you use it?

Well, I should go see anyway, sub-zero. Just to be sure.

eppo, yeah, probably. If you mean to not use the CO2 cartridge to dispense the beer, you can unscrew the tap from the 'keg' jug and just pour the beer out. Don't know how carbonated it will be though.

BevMo fricken ROCKS!!! went to one the first time when I went home to fresno last mnth. I wish we had one around here in Iowa

Has anyone seen these around the dallas/ft worth area? Sounds like something interesting to check out and see what can be done with it.

These seem like a great possibility.

With the party pig, I have resorted to packaging like advertised. Then I leave it tap side up, and then let the beer come to room temperature. This activates the pouch leaving me to burp out the air until beer comes out the tap. Then I can do whatever I want with the pig before I take it to a party. I hated activating those stupid pouches with shots of pressurized CO2. I can't wait to follow this thread more and see how the little canisters of CO2 work. Maybe it will go right along with the pigs in that application.

i have been looking at the leland webpage from the link provided earlier in the post. Has anyone ordered from them directly. I like the set up williams brewing has but wondering if ordering direct from leland would be cheaper?

Got 12 gram CO2 from the LHBS. They're a little smaller in size than what came on this thing. I loosely screwed one in and it looks like it will fit. Won't know till I do it for real though.

pendragon, the Coors thing I have was bought in the DFW. Not sure where but probably a beer store, not a grocery store.

If there's not much of a gap between the size of the cartridge and the slot, maybe try wrapping something around it to bridge the gap like teflon plumbers tape?

Maybe.

The jug is hard as a rock today. Wonder if I'll even need the CO2. Good news is, it's not leaking. Sealed up real good. Didn't explode either.

Just tried it with no CO2. Beer comes out quite forcefully and makes a foamy head. Still seems like it may be lacking a little in carbonation but, this is that weird licorice beer so, no telling.

So far, I'll say you can put beer in it and get beer back out of it.

There's a problem. The spike that pierces the CO2 cartridge and is fluted to allow the CO2 to go into the tap is not hard fixed to the tap. It sits, loosely, in a rubber O ring. The neck of the cartridge I have is just a bit wider than the original and will not fit into the O ring. I can't make the cartridge compress it enough either. The result is that the spike lays over and the cartridge doesn't get pierced. It's a very small spike so gluing it may not work. Maybe I can ream out the O ring.

I'd be curious if a Tap-a-Draft head will screw onto the bottle. Maybe they're using the same bottles. If I find folks buying these things, I could score the bottles off them cheap for my TAD system. :D

The Tap-a-Draft head does screw on to these bottles. I got a empty one from my cousin and and rather then trying to figure out how to use the head that came with it I just tossed it and used the TAD one. After reading this thread kind of wish I would of kept the other one now to.

Not the exact same thing, but Nitrous is used for dispensing some beer. Guinness would be one example.

Cinci;

Its stated on the box for about 30 days.
I can't wait to get one and try it out! Wierd thought since I just got my mini frdge going and all setup and ready for a tower on top and a full corney inside ready to pour.

This might make a nice beach setup!
