I'm working on getting some boards/switches mounted in my control panel and have drilled some holes for sensor connections but they came out lousy (very frayed on the inside). I have a spade bits for the larger holes.

So, what is the best way to drill a clean hole through fiberglass?

i usually do it about halfway thru then start from the other side to minimize splintering/fraying, especially with spade bits.

Use a Forstner Bit and clamp a board tight to the back side of what you are going to drill. The Forstner Bit will drill a nice clean hole topside and the board will prevent tearout on the back.

+1 on the backing board. Works great, and keeps most of the mess on the outside! Use a spade bit with the points on the outside to keep the hole edge clean. Flat bits will blow out the front side too.
Or a hole saw...
