Totally going digital. I bought a dial scale awhile back that was supposed to go to 20# and the thing was accurate to about .5 #'s (it didn't register after .5 #). I have seen the Escali that is accurate to 11 but northern brewer has the aws that is supposed to be accurate to 35 if my memory is correct. They are about the same price, didn't know if people had a brand preferance.

Wally world has a digital fish scale up to 50 lbs. Hang a bucket from the bottom zero it out and fill with grain. It's accurate to the oz and only $20.

These two sources are good:

You may want to consider buying two scales. One large capacity and one with more precison for hops and water salts. Even though some of the large capacity scales claim to be accurate to a fraction of an ounce, they usually aren't when weighing tiny amounts. If they are, they will be on the pricey side.

I have an Escali that I got at Amazon... LOVE IT for grain

I have an American Weigh jeweler scale that I got at Amazon... I use for measuring .1g amounts of salts to add to my water.

I totally agree Catt! I have a great little digital that I use for hops and such now. I have been using it to weigh base grain by the 1/2#, takes forrrrrreeeeevvvvvvveeeeerrrrr on the 10 gallon batches.

I just bought a 1/100 gram scale from AmericanWeigh. It can measure a single hop! (.0075 ounces) It'll measure from .001-500 grams. (or down to .0001 ounces)

I am going to use this for precise chemical additions and hop measurement.

I have a .1 ounce scale that goes up to 17 lbs for my grains. Got it at a food gadget store.

I think you may be off by one decimal place there. It should be 0.01 on the grams and 0.001 for the ounces. Regardless, that is extremely fine precision.

Oh good catch, your right on the decimal places! It's a very nifty thing to have. No more guessing on a gram and a half!

Thanks for all of the input folks. I think I am going to snag the one from northernbrewer now (have some other stuff to order, SMACK MY YEAST UP coozie) and get one of the .01 g resolution scales in the very near future. Sending off water samples to ward this weekend so I can start playing with my water. Pol, Tim, thanks for the suggestion for the .01 g, I think that will be very important with the water profiles. :mug::D

I use my bathroom scale which is kind of cumbersome. I have to stand really still when I am holding the bowl of grain or it can be off by as much as 5lbs. My beer never seems to be consistant. :cross:

Salute! :mug:

For real, I use the Escali and it works out great.
