I do not know the answer to this riddle
Hey, Emjay, I'm pulling out my fiddle.... :mug:

A man hijacks an aeroplane transporting both passengers
Eight of them and valuable cargo.
Come on now this riddles not about sorrow
After taking the cargo, the man demands nine parachutes,
Puts one of them on, and lets out a tute
He jumps, leaving the other eight behind.
There is no perfect answer "To this rhyme"
Did I mention my dog is named Dancer?
He's a funny little dog but brings no real answer
So why is this riddle so out there
I'm not quite sure but makes me want more brew hardware
So the final question is, I'll reiterate
Why did he leave eight?
Your answers I do appreciate
Cleverness will make one of the answers quite great!

Well there were 8 passengers + 1 hijacker = 9. Or 8 passengers + 1 pilot = 9.

Geez. I didn't realize this thread still existed, I thought it was in the pine(s).

I was going to post that (the pilot one, specifically - a highjacker is necessarily a passenger) but it seemed too obvious, especially when Dan talked about "cleverness".

Then again, I did (uncharacteristically poorly in 12th grade philosophy because I thought critiques on philosophers (eg Descartes) were "too obvious", figuring that if such a renowned thinker didn't see the apparently obvious holes in his reasoning, there was probably a good reason why. But nope, it was always the obvious thing (to me, anyways). Embarrassed myself a few times with elaborate, imaginative answers, when the correct ones were simple and straightforward.

I'm not going to try to rhyme this time.. oops

A man hijacks an aeroplane transporting both passengers
Eight of them and valuable cargo.

This first line threw me for a loop. If I would have read "a man hijacks an aeroplane tranporting eight passengers and valuable cargo." I hope to think I would have seen the answer more clearly. Throwing in "both" just took me down the wrong path for some reason and like Emjay said, all kinds of crazy answers were coming up.

Glad this riddle got answered by minds brighter than mine. It was eating into my brain time.

Let me throw this in just for arguments sake....
What if there were 8 hijackers? Hence the phrase "carrying both passengers and 8 of them. What if there is only 2 passengers? Thats how i read it.

Then it makes no sense that, singularly, "a man hijacks a plane", and "them" would not properly refer to anything. It also doesn't use the word "and", as you inserted.

There must be a pilot, so that has to be the right answer.

When it uses the word "both", it refers to carrying "both passengers and cargo". With better punctuation, it should read something like:

Dan said:
A man hijacks an aeroplane transporting both passengers (eight of them) and valuable cargo.

Also, the hijacker(s) would be passengers as well.

QED

Maybe the hijacker is the pilot. He stole the cargo and jumped leaving eight passengers and chutes behind? I don't know how a pilot could hijack a plane though

Edit: realized it had already been answered lol

Sorry no rhyming again.

I think LRB, that Pilot IS the correct answer. I actually searched the internet on this one and that was the most common answer.

This is a toughy. I did a quick search and couldn't find it so here it is.

Five men find themselves stranded on a small dessert Island.
Checking out the island they find an abundance of coconuts and a monkey.

They gather coconuts on the first day and after amasing a huge pile decide to retire for the night and divide up the coconuts in the morning.

During the night man #1 wakes and decides he will divide them up and hide his pile before anyone else wakes up. He does so and winds up with 5 equal piles and 1 coconut left over. He stashes his pile, puts the other 4 equal piles together and gives the extra coconut to the monkey.

One by one each of the other 4 men wake up and do the same and each time there is 1 odd coconut which is given to the monkey.

In the morning they awake to see a greatly reduced pile but since they each were guilty of sneaking off with their shares they say nothing and divide up the remaining pile into 5 equal piles. On this last division there is no extra coconut for the monkey, just 5 equal piles.

What is the smallest possible number of coconuts that could have been in the original pile they had before retiring for the night?

bosco

There are 21 coconuts in the original pile. Man #1 buries 4 and gives one to the monkey leaving 16. Man #2 buries 3, and gives one to the monkey leaving 12. The monkey takes another one leaving 11. Man #3 buries 2 gives one to the monkey leaving 9. The monkey puts two back in the pile leaving 11. Man #4 buries 2 gives one to the monkey leaving 8. The monkey takes 2 more leaving 6. Man #5 buries 1 gives 1 to the monkey leaving 5 in the pile in the morning.

No tricks in this one... The monkey only gets 5 coconuts. He gets ONE from each of the 5 night time divisions. In the morning the last division works out to 5 equal piles and none for the monkey.... The monkey does not put any coconuts back.

21 is not correct.

Well, its not hard to google the answer. Its not really a riddle, its more like fairly complex math.

Sorry about not being a riddle.

I saw this back in 1963 or so. It was in a book by (I'm pretty sure) National Scientific ?? "100 of the most difficult puzzles."

Was a killer to solve with no internet or calculators..
Did it like most mathematicians "worked it out with a pencil."

if you have the time
in this thread we rhyme
it adds to the puzzles
sometimes gives the googlers a muzzle
but that its not a proper riddle
is no reason to grab a fiddle...I,er, mean sit and diddle
I like the difficult math
and when I'm awake and sober I'll seek path

Writing that was probably harder than solving the puzzle..:)

huh, what. has it been answered. Was busy writing rhymes. But dont have an answer
I know you said nothing to do with the monkey.
I am just going to post some rhyme to keep this riddle thread funky
It is a riddle thread but as well as that
Rhyming riddles and answers is where it's at
I don't have an answer but sure this will be amazingly simple
When somebody explains the answer to this riddle
Those are always the hardest, Emjay I'm playing my fiddle
Tried in my head to do some quick math
But a calculator was better up to the task
All I know now is there's probably no tricky math here
And if there is I'll have to cry in my beer
Anything times five is equally devided by five
So what is the odd one that is thrown out
Unless it's been half eaten by a monkey drinking stout.
Then each time the batch was devided
There was an extra, I'm just recite'n
If a monkey had taken another bite during each evolution
Ah crap.. I don't know the answer
But my dog dasher is conferring with prancer
And who the fork knows, they might come up with a solution:D

Sorry! I am poetically challenged. So this is a straight riddle in it basic form.

I promise there are no tricks like "The monkey ate one" or anything like that..LOL

Thanks for the answer it made my night..:mug:

Bosco is this truly just math
Is that where the answer's at?

Dan,

Yes. Math all the way. No shenanigans or word tricks. Made easier today by calculators and computers.

Not simple math, but boring math in any case..LOL

As the last of my ale is finished I am off to dreamland.
Goodnight:)

The final formula isn't so hard for any S number of sailors and M number of monkeys, but getting to it involves matrix calculation at an advanced level. I'm an engineer with plenty of advanced calculus and I had a hard time following the solution and still couldn't do it now after reading it.

"Using standard linear algebra techniques of matrix elimination "

15625
all divisible by 5
I like my monkey suggestion
post'n this post i'm almost regrett'n

Well I've calculated up to 2500 alright
But the correct answer is still higher.
I think it's about time to say goodnight
Simply for the fact that I'm beginning to tire.

Years ago when I thought I was smart
My cousin said I was just a young upstart
He gave me a book that included this puzzle
In hopes of quieting me with a mental muzzle

I knew I could do it and prove him wrong
So I set out to solve it no matter how long
With pads of paper and pencils galore
I worked and I worked till my fingers were sore

After a week or two of scrap paper and math
I began to see some light, Yes the end of my path
The number got larger but always left one?
The morning division should be equal so the monkey got none?

Again to the paper the pencils and pad
This thing was driving me totally mad
Dumb luck enriched with pure stubborness
Eventually led to my well earned success.

Yes I did solve it, which I'll never regret
The answer I know the solution I forget.

I hate math problems but i love to rhyme
Which is why i would give Dan my very last dime
So the answer, you see, wont be coming from me
But await i will for the answer to hear
If i sound like Yoda, then go blow snot
For there is no try, only do or do not
So i leave you with this tid bit of info
Time for a beer, so now i must go...

And for what its worth, And just to piss emjay off
Riddle rhymes with fiddle, now i hope you dont develop a cough!

To find the smallest pile you have to work a while. For simplicty and for the sake of time. From this point forward I will cease to rhyme.

The morning left 5 coconuts. Add one and multiply by five. Do this five times and you get 19,531. The lowest possible number to end with is 5, therefore the lowest possible number to begin with is 19,531.

I took each number starting with 24 and multiplied by five and when that did not work I added five to the original number. It took a couple of hours but I found the correct number of coconuts it's 3121

3121 - 1 = 3120. Division 1
3120 / 5 = 624
So 3120 - 624 = 2496
2496 - 1 = 2495. Division 2
2495 / 5 = 499
So 2495 - 499 = 1996
1996 - 1 = 1995. Division 3
1995 / 5 = 399
So 1995 - 399 = 1596
1596 - 1 = 1595. Division 4
1595 / 5 = 319
so 1595 - 319 = 1276
1276 - 1 = 1275. Division 5
1275 / 5 = 255
So 1275 - 255 = 1020

The morning division would be 1020 / 5 = 204

As I have yet to do it
I will enter my part
A simple riddle
To give me a start

(the rhyming is a stretch I know.. read carefully :) )

Everyone loves breakfast
This you know is true
Especially if it's enjoyed
With a fantastic home brew

2 fathers and 2 sons sat down
to breakfast together
It was a great morning
With perfect weather

All of them decided
That they would have Eggs
Luckily they had three of them
amongst all their kegs

If each of the had one
and breakfast was done
How could they all eat eggs
And be filled with just one.

There is only 3 people. A grandfather his son and grandson

The middle person is both a father and a son

well that was too quick lol.. I spent more time than that trying to figure out how to rhyme it.

Sorry I should have waited
Rhyming takes more time than I anticipated
I should have given others time to guess
So anymore i will show restraint without trying to impress :) (note: I hadn't heard that one before though)

Wow I was way off, I forgot to remove one pile. Good job brewing bound.

Guess that one was easy
Ill have to search my mind
Hopefully next time
A more difficult riddle I will find

It's been a while
Since story problems I knew
This makes me realize
How much time has just flew

I got one I'll never solve.

"Why is my wife so gall darned mean?"

She loves me and hates me at the same time
There is a solution...Somewere...That Ive not found...
