To all,

A couple weekends back, I purchased a lovely brew, Might Arrow, and enjoyed it thoroughly. Looking for help to decode this brew and make an extract clone of it. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Here is a excerpt from New Belgium's website:

MIGHTY ARROW Pale Ale provides lots of pleasurable sniffs from Amarillo and Cascade hops with a fetching honey malt base. This is our brewed tribute to Arrow, Kim's Aussie/Border Collie mix who ran (literally) New Belgium for 12 years. When she wasn't patrolling the brewery grounds, she was famous for her office visits: She never met a tummy rub she didn't like. Atta girl Arrow.

Seasonal: February, March, April.
Just the facts Ma'am...
ABV - 6.0%
IBU - 34
Calories - 180
Hops - Target, Goldings, Cascade, Amarillo
Malts - Pale, Honey, Caramel
TG - 2.1

I am no expert by any means at copying beers, but I had this in AR Saturday night and we all LOVED it so I'm going to give it a whirl. I have heard mixed information about steeping with Honey Malt so proceed at own risk there. Also, I've never used Target so that is a wild guess for the IBU match, but I def noticed the Cascade more than Goldings in aroma.

Recipe Specifications
--------------------------
Batch Size: 5.50 gal
Estimated OG: 1.057 SG
Estimated IBU: 34.9 IBU
Boil Time: 60 Minutes

Ingredients:
------------
Amount Item Type % or IBU
7.00 lb Extra Light Dry Extract (3.0 SRM) Dry Extract 82.35 %
1.00 lb Caramel Malt - 40L (Briess) (40.0 SRM) Grain 11.76 %
0.50 lb Honey Malt (25.0 SRM) Grain 5.88 %
1.00 oz Cascade [5.50 %] (60 min) Hops 17.2 IBU
1.00 oz Goldings, US [4.40 %] (30 min) Hops 9.5 IBU
0.50 oz Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (20 min) Hops 8.1 IBU
0.50 oz Amarillo Gold [8.50 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops -
1.00 items Gelatin (Secondary 3.0 days) Misc
1.00 items Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 5.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs California Ale (White Labs #WLP001) Yeast-Ale

Edit: Found a few recipes reviewed and this hop schedule sounds good without even using target.

Since I have personally never had the brew, formulating the recipe is kind of tough... But I'll try to help.

I would try something like this: (5ga Batch, 4ga boil. IBU will vary with size of boil)

MALTS:
-----------
7lb Light or Ex-Light DME
8oz Honey Malt (Can be steeped)
4-8oz Crystal/Caramel 20L Malt (Steeped as well)

HOPS: (Pellets)
----------
60 Min Addition: .75oz Target
20 Min Addition: .75oz E. Kent Goldings
10 Min Addition: .5oz Amarillo
5 Min Addition : .75oz Cascade Hops

DRY HOP: 1oz each Cascade and Amarillo.
--------------

Stats:

O.G: 1.062
F.G: 1.016
ABV: 6.00%
IBU: 34.6
SRM: 9.4

Funny. I hadn't seen this post when I posted mine and we were pretty close.. lol

Thanks! I need to pull the ingrediants together and get a brew going in the next week or two. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Again, thanks for all the help.

Do that! I already have ingredients on hand for some other beers, but I want to try this soon so it would be good to know how close you can get.

On the Google Group for Grabass (Greater Raleigh Area Brewers And Suds Sippers), I posted the same inquiry and one of the guys actually wrote New Belgian Brewery a year ago about Might Arrow. Here is the response to him:

Hi David,*
*
*
*Glad to hear you are a fan of our beers!*
*
*
*Here are some pointers on brewing a Mighty Arrow of your own.*
*
*
* *
*
*
*Use about 85% pale malt and 15% Munich style malt (25L color).*
*
*
*Mash for 45 minutes at 65 C.*
*
*
*Boil for 80 minutes.*
*
*
*Shoot for about 30 IBU and use Cascade and Amarillo hops with the majority
of them going in at the very end of boil.*
*
*
*Ferment at about 20 degrees C with a neutral Ale yeast.*
*
*
*Dry hop with Cascade and Amarillo after fermentation.*
*
*
*

"The discrepancy I see here is that they don't mention honey malt or caramel
in this recipe, but it definitely says it on the bottle/website. As far as
extract goes you should be able to get those percentages because I think
they sell munich LME at AMB." -David

Hope that helps and I'm going to brew this soon. Good luck Shawn!

Chris
