Well as I was chewing on my breakfast cereal, and day Dreaming of a Dark Beer, I wondered if anyone had used Steel Cut Oats as an all grain beer ingredient?

Yep. I use Steel Cut Oats (or whatever oats I have on hand) in my oatmeal stout. They need to be cooked first, so I do a cereal mash first. Quick oats or instant oats don't need to be cooked first.

Yep, we used them in a dark saison last fall. Make sure to use a lot of water when you boil them so they don't scorch.

I use 8-12 oz of steel cut oats in my Scottish ales. I cook them for 30 minutes and add them directly to the mash. Recommend at least 4 parts water to 1 part oats, and plan to stir so they don't scorch.
