Left Hand Brewing. Milk Stout.

I taste smoke? I taste Coffee? I taste...Black Patent malt?

Does anyone have some actual tasting notes I can see while I drink the last 2 of these. I just can't seem to nail down the flavors.

I don't have any tasting notes, but I do remember that it is a great beer. Here is a clone recipe I found on the NB forum. I have not brewed it yet but I remember reading that it tasted very much like LH Milk Stout.

Hope this helps,

My notes are from a winter brew tasting we held last year...All I can make out is "Good beer, taste dark, <something something something> - burps well"

You guys rock.
Thanks for the recipe....I'll be brewing that soon.

Looking at the recipe I can definitely taste the Chocolate malt, and I'll bet that the Roasted Barley is what I am tasting that I described as "Smoky" on the back and sides of the tongue.

Thanks again.

Just had one a couple nights ago. You guys are right on the chocolate, possibly the smokiness, and definitely as MILKY an aftertaste as you can get. Love that beer.

I've never used lactose before- is it put in a strainer bag into the boil?

Just dump it into the boil.

I just made a Sweet Stout and I actually put the lactose in the kettle before boiling....doesnt really matter as far as I know......but no bag...just dump it in....it is just milk sugar

Any way someone could convert this to an extract recipe for me. This will be my second solo brew and I don't have the equipment or experience to do AG yet.
So judging from the flaked oats and barley I gather I am looking at a partial mash.

I downloaded beer smith last night so I was able to convert it. As suspected it requires a partial mash because of the flaked oats and barley. Anyone know of a good substitute?

I recently brewed this. After about 2.5 weeks in the bottle, I cracked one. Disappointment. Gave it another 3 weeks. GOLD!!!

This is one of the best beers I have ever brewed. I love it, wife loves it, dog loves it.

If you like stouts this is worth a go. Great recipe. Very, very close to Left Hand.

BTW I used s-04 yeast. Worked like a champ.

I'm brewing it right now. Brewers best milk stout extract kit.. Will they taste nearly the same?

My gf seems to have a sweet tooth similar to your wife. I am using this modified version soon! Thank you!

Here are a couple pics moving into secondary. Smelled great, taste test from the very bottom was still very good. Added 1/2 packet cocoa nibs, will wait another 2 weeks or so and see what comes of it. Fyi, this is my ghetto way of filtering from primary to secondary, with a couple grains bags and a colander as filter. Works great.

I did a very similar recipe. Just know it takes a few months to mellow out. I brewed mine dec 5th and it's tasting reallllly good right now. I added an extra lb of pale and hit 1.071 and 1.028.

That filter setup looks like you'd be introducing quite a bit of oxygen into your beer, no?
